May. 21, 2009 - The Way We Raise "Em in the West
Posted in Just for Fun

Be sure to turn off the music on my sidebar before you watch the videos or you'll hear a confusion of noises.  You may have to watch them twice for them to buffer correctly. Posting videos is new territory for me so I may need someone to guide me in fine tuning the process.

Yee Haw!  Ride 'em cowgirl.  It was probably this poor kids first time riding a sheep and she gets this...  (She was perfectly fine when she got up.)

This bull rider was de-ter-mined! Nobody had been able to make a qualifying ride (8 seconds minumum).  He was the last rider.  I think he would have been pretty stiff after this ride!

Feb. 24, 2009 - Study That Didn't Take Much Study
Posted in Just for Fun

Take a look at this Frosted Mini-Wheats box - at the very top where it says Clinically Shown to improve kids' attentiveness by nearly 20%.

In very small print there is a 1 next to the 20%. If you read the footnote for that notation here is what it says.

Based upon independent clinical research, kids who ate Kellogg's Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal for breakfast had up to 13% better attentiveness three hours after breakfast than kids who ate no breakfast.

I hope they didn't spend too much time on this "in depth" study - or very much money. Funny how they try to wow you with their studies but then you see the fine print... Sure, I can see why eating something for breakfast would be better than nothing. Some things just take good old common sense. LOL

Feb. 24, 2009 - A B See Photo Meme
Posted in Just for Fun

This might get interesting. I can do this every Friday or not - depending on if I get it done. Sounds good to me.

Here are the rules… be sure to post them when you join!

1. Post a photo for each letter of the alphabet of anything that starts with that letter.

2. Write a few short explanatory, quirky, or witty sentences about each photo you post.

3. Only post one photo at a time (the meme can take as long as you want - a month, three months, whatever… you aren’t being graded). You can link them later in a blog post so they are listed in order if you are the list-making type.

4. If you want to join the meme, sign the Mr. Linky and use the “A B See Photo-Meme” graphic in your sidebar. Link your graphic to this post and announce that you will be joining us.

5. When you post a photo, come by and add it to the weekly A B See linky that we’ll be posting on Foto Fridays for those who have some alphabetical photo to share. You can sign it each week as many times as you have posted photos - one time for each photo linked post. Make sure you link back to the HSBA on your posts, too - so others can come and join the linky.

Dec. 4, 2008 - A "Crumby" Poll
Posted in Just for Fun

We're having a little "discussion" about crumbs in our house right now.  This is it.

My kids each have a different meal time clean-up job.  One sweeps while another wipes the counters and table.  The question is should they sweep the crumbs from the counter directly onto the floor since another somebody will be along shortly to sweep?

I have created a poll on my sidebar asking what you do in your home.  You don't have to be a registered user of Homeschool Blogger to participate and all voters will remain anonymous.

We can't wait to see the results - especially if they support our point of view.

Crumbling under the crumb issue and needing some help...

Elisabeth

Sep. 3, 2007 - A Quiver of 17 Arrows - for Now
Posted in Just for Fun

I thought my quiver was full until I read about this family that The Duggar Family - October 2006just had their 17th child!  Wowowee.

According to Discovery Health the Duggars's have changed about 90,000 diapers.  Hmmm, I wonder if she uses cloth diapers?

You've got to see the house that they built debt free.  Go here for photos of their commercial kitchen, laundry room that has 4 washers and 4 dryers, the playroom which has an indoor slide, rock climbing wall and other entertainments.  Sounds like a built-in vacation spot.

After reading about Mr. and Mrs. Duggar, I feel like my family of 6 kids is rather small.  But eleven years solid of pregnancy PLUS nursing... (do you hear me whimpering)

Aug. 29, 2007 - Passing on the Award and Honor
Posted in Just for Fun

To my great surprise Natural Paths has given me this award.

I'm just a wife/mother that enjoys writing about the happenings at our home.  I have been so blessed by many peoples blogs.  Many of you have given me encouragement and inspiration for my homemaking and homeschooling responsibilities.

"This award is for those bloggers who are nice people; good blog friends and those who inspire good feelings and inspiration. Also for those who are a positive influence on our blogging world.”

To pass on the Nice Matters Award, I would like to name:

Michelle at At Home With Jesus

Bobbie at Encouragement Along the Way who I see has already been nominated for this award, but she gets it from me just the same

southmsmomof4 at By Gods Grace

School for Us

Back in July, Lindafay with Higher Up and Further In nominated me for the following award.  What an honor that was too.  If you haven't read her blog you must.  It's a wonderful source of how-to inspiration on homeschooling following Charlotte Mason's philosophy of education.

...Reflect on five bloggers who have been an encouragement, a source of love, impacted you in some way, and have been a Godly example to you. Five bloggers who when you reflect on them you get a sense of pride and joy… of knowing them and being blessed by them.

For this award I would like to nominate:

Ann V at Holy Experience

Katherine at Raising Five

Barb at The Heart of Harmony

LaPaz Home Learning

And last but not least, my sweet daughter's blog.  I'm blessed by her everyday! Serenity at Beautiful Girlhood

May. 22, 2007 - 7 of My Favorite...
Posted in Just for Fun

I was tagged by Bobbi at Encouragement Along the Way.  This is quite the eclectic list.  It was harder to complete then you would think.

7 of my favorite books:

To Train Up A Child by Michael Pearl & Debi Pearl

A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver Van DeMille

Teaching the Trivium by Harvey & Laurie Bluedorn

The Hospitality Commands by Alexander Strauch

The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook by Dr. Raymond Moore

Freedom from Tyranny of the Urgent by Charles E. Hummel (still reading)

College without Compromise by Scott & Kris Wightman

I found it difficult to name 7 of my favorite books because I like so many for one reason or another; so I listed the books that have impacted my thinking.

7 of my Favorite Devotionals: I don't really have any devotional books except My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers

7 of my favorite Bible Studies:  I've only did my own studies.

7 of my favorite movies: Moody Bible Science Videos, Kent Hovind Creation Science Videos, The Sound of Music, Inn of the Sixth Happiness, The Hiding Place, Sergeant York,  Pollyanna  (We hardly ever watch any new films so these are the only ones I could think of.)

7 of my favorite foods:  Tacos, Steaks, Lasagna, Pizza, Potatoes, Yams, Homemade Pretzels

7 of my favorite drinks:  Water, O.J., Goats Milk, Sparkling Cider, Fresh Squeezed Lemonade, Hot Chocolate, Chai Tea,

Okay, I'm going to tag Barb over at Harmony Art Mom, Leigh at Riverbend Prep and Fox Valley Family at At Home with Jesus - Our Journey Begins.  Play, if you want. :)

Feb. 9, 2007 - Our "Special Plate"
Posted in Just for Fun

Like most everyone I enjoy having traditions.  A tradition can add spark or color to the most ordinary of days.  Just like looking back on pictures, our minds seem to make the memory more special then it actually seemed at the moment of happening.

It's so easy to get caught up in just living life that we miss doing the little things that can make for special memories.  So, when I came across this idea of Marking it Down (sorry, I can't get a direct link to the post) at A Place Called Home I knew it would be a hit at my house.

All you need are dry erase markers a plate and an easel to hold the plate.  Each day write something uplifting, a Scripture verse, prayer request, Happy Birthday or special events happening in the family.

The kids are very interested each morning to see what mom has put on the plate.

When my boys arrived home from a ski trip they found this -

Then another morning,  the day began inauspiciously (uhhmmm, should I say it?) due to my grumpiness.  We played Bible trivia around the breakfast table and that along with my efforts of snapping out of "it" caused for a whole lightening of the atmosphere.  After this event (no, not the event of my becoming cheerful) but Wesley's winning Bible Trivia - our "Special Plate" had this written on it

Seth went to a math competition -

This is what the children saw today.

As you can see I don't have a real fancy plate but it's what I had on hand.  It doesn't take much effort and the children are really enjoying it.

If you make one, just leave me a comment.   I'd love to see it.

Oct. 29, 2006 - Is This for Real???
Posted in Just for Fun

Can this really be true?  I don't know but I thought it was too funny not to share with you.

Check out your salad closely before buying or eating - - and perhaps next time when someone says “soup or salad” - - say SOUP!  J

Check out the bag below….

Don’t forget this brand of fresh lettuce!  What probably happened is, the water the lettuce was washed in contained polliwogs and these became fresh new frogs, right in the packages . So if you are looking for salad fixins with a little more body, then be sure and try this brand.
Soup or Salad... Soup please!!
 J
