Whew--Thought I Made a Blunder

Posted in Personal Stuff

Today I thought I misprounounced a word and was quite embarrassed.  Have you ever done that?  Reading is great, but sometimes I'm too lazy to check if I'm pronouncing words correctly in my head when they're not used commonly in speech and this has gotten me in trouble before.  In fact, my dear children will never let me live down an incident that occurred TWO years ago.

We were using an SAT vocabulary prep book to practice spelling and I came to the word cacophony.   I had pronounced it in my head for YEARS as ca (like cat) co (rhymes with no) phoney.   When I pronounced the word the first time, my children all looked at me with very puzzled expressions.  I  said the word in a sentence and pronounced it again and Joshua started howling.  He finally calmed down enough to tell me it was ca (like cat) cough any.  Well, I had to go check the online dictionary and sure enough, he was correct.  The little twerp prefers audio books AND has an awesome vocabulary, so I have to watch what I say around him.

Back to today.  Something similar happened when I was out and about.  I used the word niche in a sentence, something about finding my niche.  I always pronounced it like it rhymes with ditch.  The person I was talking to said the word in a sentence a few seconds later, only she pronounced it neesh.  I thought I had blown it again!

I looked it up and to my relief it appears you can pronounce it any way you want!  I like words like that.

Um, I can see why Josh would howl. Caco-phony is pretty funny. Hmmm. I've always pronounced it in my head like caCAPHony. Which means I probably spelled it incorrectly in Biz' graduation scrapbook. Said scrapbook is 3 feet away from me, but my blanket is warm and I'm comfy and too lazy too get up & check.

Cheez is quite the word nerd, so it always surprises me when *she* mispronounces a word. I have to remember that she hasn't lived even half as long as I have & thus hasn't had as much opportunity to hear words pronounced. I think those of us who read a lot ARE more prone to mispronounce words b/c we are seeing them w/o hearing them and get used to how we say them in our heads.

Altho that was no excuse for my big embarrassing moment a few yrs ago when Hubz & I were at a coffee shop and I ordered a "lat". He will never let me live that one down!

Oh,and RYC-- benefits? What are those? (We've been self-employed for a long time.)

Jan. 9, 2009 - my word: calliope

Posted by kympossible
I am the word police at my house. Imagine my embarrassment that my DH will never let me live down my mispronunciation of the word "calliope" UGH!

One of my favorite book finds has been one called "the big book of beastly mispronunciations" which I found for 25c at the library sale. the author pokes fun at all kinds of commonly mispronounced words, explains how to pronounce them correctly, and why. He has proved me right in several bets. And wrong in one or two. 8~/

Blessings,
Kym
