Tightwad Tuesday-Bulk Buying Herb/Spices and Such

And this is just the front row of my collection!

I know, I know, every Food Network Foodie will tell you NOT to do this, but having a Philistine Tongue saves SOOOO much money.  Over the years I have collected MANY large containers of herbs and spices and assorted flavorings and they last for YEARS...at least according to my taste buds.  I recently finished a container of Chili Powder.  It had to be at least five years old--and I have some that are OLDER.  They taste fine to me.

The containers also are quite reusable for other items when you finish the original product!

I purchased the majority of these from Sam's Club because that's the food club nearest (by FAR) to me.  I've started writing the date purchased and the price because I'd really like to know how much prices have risen on some of these long lasting products.

I have some thyme that I bought bulk that's been in my pantry for over 13 years!!! I know it's not very strong anymore because when I smell it it's not very aromatic (is that the right word?). I still use it though. :)

Now I keep all my bulk spices in the freezer and just refill jars. I have any herb you could ever want almost. :)

I stock pile herbs as well. I actually love growing them and then drying them when I can and storing them in bulk.

When I can't do that, I buy in bulk. It just made me chuckle to see that I am not the only one who does this. lol

I use "old" herbs & spices, too. Six-month shelf-life, ha. They may not be quite as potent, but years-old herbs & spices still work.

Feb. 28, 2009 - In Bulk

Bulk is the way to go! I'm disappointed that Costco only offers a few spices in bulk and doesn't offer Oregano and Basil. I've been taking to mixing my own Taco Seasoning for the last year or so - and it's so easy to do and is just as good but without any mystery ingredients. I was surprised. I wanted to do that for the longest time, but I thought it wouldn't be as good, but it was. Everybody loves the Taco meat. Anyhow...I've got to get around to doing some bulk purchasing because some things are just way too much at the store.
