• Jun. 2, 2006 - The Apprentice
Our oldest son has been working for a friend of ours the past couple of weeks and has now officially become known as "The Apprentice". Not Donald Trump power suit style, but good old fashioned dusty, sweaty, work clothes style.
Our friend has recently launched his own home remodeling business and has hired Joe to help him. So far Joe has helped with a roof (very hard hot work he says), some carpentry projects, and now they are laying a ceramic tile floor. Yep my boy is getting lots of great hands-on experience. I think his future wife will be very thankful that he's getting this experience, but I'm picturing all of the projects he'll be able to do for US!
I have always really liked the old apprenticeship idea. It just makes so much sense to me. You learn by doing. If you get off track someone is there to show you where you're messing up and you even get to learn the business side of things.
You know we talk a lot about teaching our kids entrepeneurial skills, but sometimes it's hard to imagine how they are going to learn all of these handy skills if "we" don't have any experience ourselves in that area. But God has shown me through all of this - yet again- that He will bring people into our lives and He will make sure that my children are equipped for His will for their lives. Especially as my oldest is approaching high school age, people question whether we'll be able to provide all of the educational opportunities he'll need for the future.
It's a daunting thought, but the truth is that God is the one that will provide these things. I trust Him a whole lot more than the public school system.
He who has begun a good work in you will be faithful to complete it until the day of Christ. Phil 1:6
