• Nov. 20, 2006 - The World's Ugliest Chicken!
The same friend who gave us our first ducks,
also gave us a turken mixed into their batch of chickens. I know that
beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but come on, does anyone want to
argue that turkens are quite possibly the world's ugliest chicken?
Many
people honestly believe that turkens are a cross between a chicken and
a turkey because of their name and strange appearance, but that is just
not true! Feathersite.com has some interesting information on the origins
of the Turken, also known as the Transylvania Naked Neck. I think it's
interesting that the Turkens actually handle the cold very well. We
took one look at that Naked Neck and started wondering if we needed to
make a little turken turtleneck. I figured we could just take a tube
sock and cut both ends off, slip it over her head, and voila, no
frostbitten naked neck! However, it seems as though that won't be
neccessary. I didn't find any information on naked neck frostbite so I
guess I won't bother making her a turtleneck. The other chickens would
probably be jealous anyway!
Think you'd like to add one of the ugly, errr... interesting-looking birds to your flock? You can order them from McMurray Hatchery.
In fact, the one we have came as a freebie with order! Makes me wonder
how many folks out there actually order these on purpose, but
nonetheless, the turken will definitely add a conversation piece to
your flock. Just do your research so you can let people know that "No,
it isn't a cross between a chicken and a turkey!"

• Nov. 20, 2006 - Missy
Thanks for your comment on my blog. I meant to respond right away, and time got away from me. I do not have an update on Missy. I have not been reading every email I get though, so an update could have been given and I didn't get it. Ever since May, I backed off the computer quite a bit. I realized that my teens were not getting nearly enough of me. The teen years can be just as needy as the baby years, as far as a constant need for guidance and direction.
I'll let you know if I hear anything at all.
God bless,
Deb
