Lessons Learned on the Farm

Marybeth posted a wonderful comment on my Paralyzed by Perfection entry in today's The Homeschool Minute.

In fact she posted a wonderful entry about her own struggles in that area. I so love what she said. Especially the part where she said, "And, sadly, many times I just get right there in the pit with him and have a conversation-- which turns into a gigantic pity party."  Isn't that the truth? One little doubt can lead into a whole big conversation, which is NEVER positive. I mean how many times do you get discouraged by the laundry and next thing you know you're beating yourself up for not praying enough with the kids, not baking your own fresh bread, and gee maybe you shouldn't even be homeschooling, you're failing at that too!?

The other day it occured to me that as homeschoolers we all battle that doubt and how important it is that we realize it for the attack from Satan that it is. So many times I've noticed, most pregnant women at some point consider putting their kids back in school, many with a demanding baby or active toddler consider it, many who are struggling with finances, or are constantly pestered by anti-homeschooling family or friends consider it too. But moms who have their kids in school don't generally question their choice, no matter how hard life gets they don't start thinking hmmm, maybe I should take them out of school, maybe the school is the problem.  Satan doesn't attack them in that area.

I remember years ago when I was going through training to be a counselor at a Crisis Pregnancy Center. The first day we all shared why we felt led to get involved with the ministry there. We were all full of enthusiasm and ready to jump in where God led us.  But by the next day, we were all starting to question if we were really the right people to do the job. Seriously, every woman around the table shared how she had started wondering once she got home if she was in over her head. Fortunately a wise woman there asked us "Where do those questions come from?" And while we all were trying to weigh whether it was God cautioning us or not, she pointed us back to Scripture. She said, "Think back to the Bible. Can you find anywhere in the Bible where God tells someone what they can not do?"

That gave us all cause for pause.....And that has served me well all these years as I sometimes struggle to discern if I'm hearing from God or if Satan is trying to lead me astray. I don't trust my feelings. I go back to God's character and His Word.

He tells us:
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. -Phillipians 4:13
and
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. - Romans 8:1

So, when you struggle with those thoughts and begin doubting your homeschooling, think about who that voice belongs to and take those thoughts captive in obedience to Christ. Remember that God always uses the unlikely to accomplish His work so that He will get the glory because we could never have managed on our own. Especially at Christmas we can look at how He sent our Savior. He wasn't at all what the people expected.

Sooo glad I prompted you to write more, as you said even more of what I needed to hear tonight... You are so right on with your words... and so funny that you are saying that about being a mom of a toddler. As my husband just reminded me the other day, I always talk about putting them in school when I have a toddler in the house! Funny I don't see these things, but Satan is good at convincing us otherwise-- that it's our failings. I love what you said about God never tell people what they can't do where a calling is concerned, only what they can, and usually it is something that SOUNDS impossible! So, thanks again, and I am so glad you let me know you wrote more on the subject. Merry Christmas!

Dear Nancy,
I wanted to let you know how uplifted I was yesterday to read your "Paralyzed by Perfection" entry through MaryBeth's blog. I am so all or nothing and it was such a great reminder to lean on Him for my strength. But after reading your recent post, specifically the following I was very hurt.

" But moms who have their kids in school don't generally question their choice, no matter how hard life gets they don't start thinking hmmm, maybe I should take them out of school, maybe the school is the problem. Satan doesn't attack them in that area."

I realize we have made different choices in regards to schools as my children are in a public school. Taking them out of school is something I wrestle with frequently and it is something that we are praying diligently about. All of us want the very best for our kids no matter if they are homeschooled, in public school or private school. Satan can absolutely attack us, as we make strive for what is best for each of our kids.
Please consider that you reach many readers, not just homeschool moms and that ultimately we can all struggle and be attacked.
Thanks,
Tammy

After reading your comment, I see where my comment could have been hurtful.

" But moms who have their kids in school don't generally question their choice, no matter how hard life gets they don't start thinking hmmm, maybe I should take them out of school, maybe the school is the problem. Satan doesn't attack them in that area."

It's not that I think moms who make other school choices don't do so prayerfully, I have many dear friends who have made the choice to put their children in public or private schools. And I do know that they have their own sets of worries and concerns about those choices. We've cried tears and shared prayers together.

But when you homeschool, you take on an additional burden and it's a burden that Satan tries to make homeschool parents question all too often. As a homeschool parent, if you confide in others when you are struggling, many people's first response is to just say "Put the kids in school. It will reduce your stressload. You won't have to deal with the bickering all day. Or then you can work and help out financially. Or maybe your child will do better there." THAT is what I was trying to convey, not that other parents take their decisions lightly.

I apologize for hurting your feelings or anyone else who reads my blog. As moms, we all have our stress and battles to face and ultimately we all need to go to God for strength and recognize sometimes WHO is saying those negative things to us.

Nancy,
Thanks for your response. I have many close friends who homeschool who would agree that the 1st response they get from some people when they are struggling is to put their child in school. I think at least for me, it helps me support and encourage my homeschooling friends and in turn get support from them when we are able to be truly honest and real with each other. It is then when we can build each other up as a Body without judgement because when we are real with each other we know each other's hearts and want the best for each other.

We all struggle with the best approach to any decision whether or not it is our school choice and Satan would love to beat us down Again, may we Lean on our Lord for His will and His wisdom. Your points were well taken and I very much apreciated your thoughts.

I wish you and your family the very best in this Christmas Season.

Tammy
