• Dec. 20, 2006 - Paralyzed by Perfection
Marybeth posted a wonderful comment on my Paralyzed by Perfection entry in today's The Homeschool Minute.
In fact she posted a wonderful entry about her own struggles in that area. I so love what she said. Especially the part where she said, "And, sadly, many times I just get right there in the pit with him and have a conversation-- which turns into a gigantic pity party." Isn't that the truth? One little doubt can lead into a whole big conversation, which is NEVER positive. I mean how many times do you get discouraged by the laundry and next thing you know you're beating yourself up for not praying enough with the kids, not baking your own fresh bread, and gee maybe you shouldn't even be homeschooling, you're failing at that too!?
The other day it occured to me that as homeschoolers we all battle that doubt and how important it is that we realize it for the attack from Satan that it is. So many times I've noticed, most pregnant women at some point consider putting their kids back in school, many with a demanding baby or active toddler consider it, many who are struggling with finances, or are constantly pestered by anti-homeschooling family or friends consider it too. But moms who have their kids in school don't generally question their choice, no matter how hard life gets they don't start thinking hmmm, maybe I should take them out of school, maybe the school is the problem. Satan doesn't attack them in that area.
I remember years ago when I was going through training to be a counselor at a Crisis Pregnancy Center. The first day we all shared why we felt led to get involved with the ministry there. We were all full of enthusiasm and ready to jump in where God led us. But by the next day, we were all starting to question if we were really the right people to do the job. Seriously, every woman around the table shared how she had started wondering once she got home if she was in over her head. Fortunately a wise woman there asked us "Where do those questions come from?" And while we all were trying to weigh whether it was God cautioning us or not, she pointed us back to Scripture. She said, "Think back to the Bible. Can you find anywhere in the Bible where God tells someone what they can not do?"
That gave us all cause for pause.....And that has served me well all these years as I sometimes struggle to discern if I'm hearing from God or if Satan is trying to lead me astray. I don't trust my feelings. I go back to God's character and His Word.
He tells us:
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. -Phillipians 4:13
and
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. - Romans 8:1
So, when you struggle with those thoughts and begin doubting your homeschooling, think about who that voice belongs to and take those thoughts captive in obedience to Christ. Remember that God always uses the unlikely to accomplish His work so that He will get the glory because we could never have managed on our own. Especially at Christmas we can look at how He sent our Savior. He wasn't at all what the people expected.
