• Dec. 16, 2007 - Saturday was FUN day!
You know, reading The Familyman's encouragements to make the Christmas season fun for the kids must be finally wearing on me. We've played To Bethlehem, we've read Cootie McKay's Nativity, and then yesterday we just had a family fun day.
Tony's company does something kind of neat for Christmas. Instead of the typical Christmas party, they host a Christmas movie day for the whole family at a local theater. Since we don't go to the movies much, the boys really get a kick out of it and I like that they're doing something for the family all together!
So we started off the day going to that. Drove through buckets and buckets of rain, but it was kind of nice because Tony got a special award for 5 years with the company and then we all got to watch Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Focus on the Family doesn't really seem to like it, but I thought it was really cute and fun. It was pretty obvious to me that they threw in a few things just so it wouldn't be rated G, but it was still fun.
I loved the Chipmunks when I was a kid. I can remember thinking it was SO cool when they had Chipettes too! I think I even had their Christmas with the Chipmunks album.
Anyway, after that Tony took the big boys to browse at Whittaker Guns for awhile so Jon and I did a little bit of last minute shopping.
Then we headed off to Bowling Green to see the Beech Bend Holiday Light Spectacular. That was absolutely amazing. You pay $15 to drive through and see their wonderful holiday lights display and get into the park. If it hadn't been raining we could've watched a drive-in Christmas movie, ridden a few rides, played putt putt golf, or done a little ice-skating, but with all the rain those things were closed. Still, we walked through their Christmas gift shop, visited the petting zoo, and then the highlight of our night was getting to see the Budweiser Clydesdales!!! They were only there for one week and last night may have been their last night there. They weren't getting them out because of the rain, but we got to go inside their barn and see them in their stalls and talk to one of the handlers. Those horses are absolutely awe-inspiring and the way they are cared for is just remarkable. Here's a neat fact sheet that gives the history and some tidbits about how much the horses eat and the such.
It was just a whole lot of fun. We came home tired and happy and thankful we didn't just stay cooped up inside all day. It was a blessing to be out with Tony and the boys all day. Can you all believe that it's only 9 days till Christmas?!
I hope you all are having a wonderful Christmas season and enjoying the time with your family and friends. Tony and I were listening to a sermon this morning that said Christianity is the only religion that talks about salvation by grace. I'm not a deep theologian or anything (and I haven't researched that statement), but I think that's pretty interesting. So many people these days get involved with other religions and talk about being open-minded. They look at the similarities, but I don't think I've ever heard it said that Christianity is the only one who truly accepts the principle of grace - unmerited favor.
With Christmas approaching, I think about how we didn't *deserve* Jesus. He was the perfect example of God's unmerited favor being poured out and offered to all of us. What a wonderful gift. Something truly worth celebrating!

Sounds like such a wonderful family day. I had to giggle at Alvin and the Chipmunks...I remember watching them as a kid! My DS would have said, "Wow, they had that way back then??" Like the 70's were 400 years ago!
A blessed CHRISTmas to you and your family,
Michelle
