Lessons Learned On the Farm

• Nov. 30, 2005 - Packrats Anonymous

After realizing that our 9 & 4 year old had too much stuff in their room to be able to put things away properly, we finally broke down and did a thorough cleaning/decluttering last night.  The 4 year old is just a plain ol' messy, but our 9 year old has joined the rest of us as a genetic packrat.

Tony & I have known each other since I was 16 and he was 18.  We got married 3 years later.  We've moved 8 times in 15 years.  And we've got too much STUFF!  Many times as we've been packing to move, we've pondered why we've kept something, but then just went ahead and threw it in a box anyway.  UGH!  We've thought about starting our own support group - Packrats Anonymous.  "Hi my name is Nancy and I never throw anything away."  Now we realize that it's not just us.  It's our boys too.

We staged an intervention last night in the room across the hall.  It was difficult, but done in love.  Hours were spent in that room.  Some things had to be thrown away because parts were lost.  I HATE that the worst.  I can typically remember what each one of them cost and SO want to believe that we'll be able to find the other pieces and play with it again.  Nonetheless for the sake of more space/less clutter, I let things be thrown away.

Then we came across great toys.  Toys that we've bought, toys that the boys have been given as gifts.  But they aren't being played with.  (Probably because they were covered up with stuff.)  Do we keep them now that the room is more organized?  NO!  We decided to bless some other child (who might not have as great of a selection) with those wonderful toys that were bought with love.  Oh it was hard to let go, but we did ok.

Finally we got to the closet.  The dreaded closet.  The closet where things are crammed and then fall in the floor and can't be found, but we know that they are in there somewhere.  Sitting nice and neatly on the top shelf was a whole row of stuffed animals.  Mostly animals that have been given to the boys over the years.  Really cute, cuddly, fun things.  But truthfully things that don't get played with or enjoyed like they should.  I took a deep breath, "Tony quick get a bag, I'm ready to give them away."  Oh, that was so tough.  Why is it that there are memories tied to each and every one of them?!  But that was what I realized.  If I tried to keep everything that was attached to a memory, I wouldn't be able to get rid of anything.  So we did keep a few (I couldn't go cold turkey ya know) and then just held on to the memories as they were packed away for donation.

Off they went for donation at our local Goodwill with a prayer that they would all find loving new homes and bless another family.  We haven't officially come up with a 12 step process for our Packrats Anonymous group, but hopefully I'm down to at least step 6 or so.

The boys are happily playing in their room.  No one is grieving over any toys that we donated.  And maybe I'm strong enough to tackle another room.

I can sympathize with you. I come from a family of packrats. Yet something happened to me. I'm still not sure just WHAT.. but it causes me to grab trash bags and throw out anything I possibly can. If I find out where I caught this BUG I will send it your way LOL!! We are moving in the spring and I keep asking myself... DO I REALLY want to move all this... and this.... and that.
When my grandmother passed away two years ago she still had all the school papers from my dad, which now is a small treasure to him.
My two sons love to collect bottle caps and lots of small and sometimes strange things. And BOY OH BOY are they messy. I had to gently remind them that Christmas is coming, and they have to be careful and respondsible with the stuff they have now if they want to have new things (other than clothes) for Christmas! Well, that worked. Their room was clean.... WAS.... LOL!!!
Well, another day another battle. LOL! I love my boys!

• Nov. 30, 2005 - Clean rooms

I just cleaned my boys' room yesterday! UGH! My boys collect rocks. I put a ban on dead things. I'm not to much of a packrat, but I know what you mean about the items having memories of their childhood! Believe it or not Boy 1 will bring things to me and say, "I don't play with this," or "I'm tired of picking this up," and have me get rid of it!! However, yesterday was a real treat in room cleaning. Boy 1 had tried his hand at interior decorating by bringing in a bunch of wild grasses to make a diarama on his book shelf. He laid them out neatly to make a bed for his large plastic panther. It looked really neat for a day or two. Then it got scattered all over the room! I was picking that grass out of everything!!

Blessings!

I'm thinking that maybe the girls will agree to me taking a photos of at least SOME of the stuffed animals...and then giving them away. We are drowning in STUFF. The 2 youngest share a room, and it's a bad scene. But, like your kids, they come by it honestly! We have a 2 car garage PACKED full of stuff. Ugh.

I'm so proud of you! I, myself, am a recovering packrat. In fact, I am the only one that is attempting recovery in this house. I live with an entire crew of packrats. I swear, you could have been describing my sons' rooms. Now that you are on such a roll, how bout you come and do my rooms??

Why, oh why, do people give stuffed animals as gifts? Every year I ask grandparents to please not give the kids any, yet every year we have more. I tried to give away some, however, my amazing memory daughter had a special connection to each one. Ugh! This is something that drives me crazy. Can you tell? LOL.

i have the same tendencies. not my husband. tripp will happily throw away ANYTHING, and i mean anything. he's the king of unpackratness. maybe i should send him that way for the next room. sometimes he cleans, goes to the dump and is back before i know what's happened. and you know? i never miss anything he doesn't tell me he's gotten rid of. but if i have to do it, oh it's sometimes hard. i must be in the mood but when i am...we get alot accomplished. sounds like you did a great job! congrats.

plan ahead for those gifts that will be arriving soon. Maybe you can get family members to give gift cards to favorite stores instead of purchasing gifts and then only get something when they really want it?

I was raised ina very "non-packrat" family, so I'm not sure where I got the gene from, but I definitely got it and promptly passed it on to ALL FIVE of my offspring!! (They get it double from me and my MIL!) A few years ago, I read a book "Clutter's Last Stand" by Don Aslett. It has convincted me ever since! Can't say I'm "cured" but at least now I attempt to be treated! Good luck!!

Hi! I'm Kimberly, and I'm a pack rat.

My sister, I am with you in your pack-rattedness! We've done a once over in the kiddo's room, and desperately need to do a second.

We had trouble getting rid of some "special" toys and clothes that were never used, but it's been worth it!

would you like to come and tackle my clutter, too? Oh, what a mess of *stuff* we have everywhere, and nowhere to store things in our old farmhouse. Daddy says that during the depression all they needed was 3 nails each---one for school clothes, one for work clothes, and one for church clothes. And one cardboard box for all the toys he and his brother and 3 sisters ever owned. Maybe they were better off then than I am now, when I stop and think about it...
