Lessons Learned On the Farm

• Apr. 4, 2008 - Wildlife Lessons on the Farm

Want to know about our latest Lessons Learned on the Farm?

Well apparently there is more than just turkey and deer up in the hills here.

Take a look at this picture from Joe's wildlife cam.

That's not our sweet Hank boy. That is one big ol' coyote if you ask me! He better keep his jaws off of our critters. We've read up on the laws for hunting coyote in Kentucky.

Coyotes are not protected in Kentucky and may be taken year-round by hunting or with traps or non-locking snares during the furbearer trapping season. Coyotes may be hunted during daylight hours only. Hunters may use hand- or mouth-operated, mechanical, or electronically operated calling or attracting devices to aid in taking coyotes.

Think that's exciting? Oh no, we've heard coyotes. We knew they were around here. But here's a little something that DID surprise us!

That's not a big kitty cat. That's a bobcat! Even though everyone in Kentucky is "supposed" to be a Wildcats fan, I'd rather this Kentucky cat keep his distance from our kids and animals. This one actually is out of season now, juuuuuust as long as it doesn't start trying to make a meal out of my family or animals!

So we've learned a little about animal identification and researched some wildlife info the past day or so. Seeing these predators on our property makes me VERY thankful for our two big dogs. So many nights they have barked and barked and we knew that they had their reasons even though we couldn't see anything. I suppose they were just letting the critters know that they were on patrol and to stay away. It made me think that I'm glad to have more than one big outside dog. A predator might consider scrapping with just one dog, but at least if we have two it might make them decide to just steer clear.

Also, this wildlife cam is  really a pretty neat gadget. We never knew all those critters were up there.

Wow, I'm thankful for God's hand of protection. Just a few more lessons learned on the farm.

I cracked up with your, 'he better keep his jaws off our critters.'

adlfjd;fjdsljfladsj That was funny. Then again, with going to PRESS on Monday I'm in looney land anyway. Man has this been a NUTSO week or what?!

Great post, Nance.

Wow - neat gadget! I don't know if I would feel more secure knowing I have that handy gadget or less secure knowing that I now realize I have those kind of critters.

I love your blog! When mine grows up, I want it to be just like yours! I really need help on my blog. Someday...... :)

Please just keep them where you live!
Do NOT send them to PA!
We went to look at a house for sale in the country several years ago; and as we were getting out of the car, a big old black bear sauntered down through the yard (just feet from where we were standing)!
Nope~ not a place to raise children.

That is just too wild! What a great idea to have that wildlife cam. I got to thinking, "What a fun hobby." But, this city slicker realized that people with farm animals need one of these cameras. I thought our deer and wild turkeys were wildlife, but, YOWZERS!, you've got Wiley Coyote in your yard.

Are the next camera shots we see of you with a double barrel rifle?

WOW! Those pictures are awesome. I think sometimes we forget that we share this world with some pretty big animals.

I live near Detroit, in a city and we get reports of coyotes all the time.

Once when I was on my moms lake we heard a pack of coyotes, very close by, and it sounded like it was feeding time. That was a terrible sound.

Thanks for sharing the pictures.

You have inspired me to get our wildlife camera set up again! We hear the coyotes, and our neighbors have seen a mountain lion in our neighborhood!! It creeps me out a little whenever the corn gets tall and I'm walking down the road lined on both sides by corn fields because I can't see what's in there. I worry about our goats, too!

How cool!

Of course, it would make me think twice about camping out in your backyard...

Wow, that is some WILD life your living! My kids enjoyed looking at your wildlife shots-we have a cabin in VT (vacation) and we've heard there are bobcat, coyotes and moose. However in the 15 years we've owned it we haven't met any of our neighbors yet (though we have black bear scratching on our house.)

I want one of these toys. I bet y'all are having a field day (no pun intended) with that thing!

I think I'm a bit desensitized to coyotes personally. We had 'em by my old house in WA and I got really used to them. Some nights I could hear their little ones yipping across the road. I enjoyed it, but then, I had a good fence and a good gun, and the good sense to not approach 'em. LOL

Did I tell you that the house here has coyotes, bobcats, gobs and gobs of turkeys, deer, and even a mountain lion (cougar where I'm from, puma where Manly's from - whatever - a BIG freaking cat that we actually saw about 100 meters from the house during Christmas break - hubby and the local POliceman went out back and found deer prints and "kitty" prints. NIIIICE.) And of course these nutty Californians say you have to play nice with the kitty... no killing for any reason, not even if the kitty kitty is ingesting your canine pal in your backyard. Hmph. I wanna go back where people eat meat.
