Lessons Learned On the Farm

Do any of you ever struggle with wondering if you are doing "enough" to serve others?

I really think most of us who struggle with that question are just underestimating what we're doing to serve since it doesn't have an official title. God tells us in 1 Cor 12  that all parts of the body are important and that God has arranged each part of the body right where He wants it to be.

In fact, I've heard a lot of buzz about Do Hard Things by Alex & Brett Harris and am looking forward to reading it. One of the reviews listed the 5 Hard Things that they challenge people (specifically teens) to do.
1. Things that are outside your comfort zone.
2. Things that go beyond what is expected or required.
3. Things that are too big to accomplish alone.
4. Things that don't earn an immediate payoff.
5. Things that challenge the cultural norm.

And I guess the big thing I'm still learning is not to discount the importance of ministering to the people God placed in the bedrooms down the hall or at my local homeschool group or at the park or the store.

Check out this blog entry at Rocks in My Dryer about Sweet Mercies.

I figure that woman was just out running errands that day, yet she was available and God used her to bless Shanon in a very realistic way and now her story is encouraging many others. How many times do we have opportunities like that?

Maybe for you it might just be passing along some clothes or homeschool books to another family. Maybe, it's inviting another family over for dinner or just taking the time to talk. Maybe it's encouraging your husband when he's had a bad day at work or praying for a friend going through a rough time.

Who knows? I think it's all just a part of living the Spirit-filled life. And while some of those tasks might not "sound" as important as teaching a Sunday School class (or whatever), just remember that the Lord tells us in Colossians 3:23, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men,"

A few years ago, I really enjoyed reading The Mitford Series with its quirky characters who were just walking out their faith daily. Father Tim would pray each day, "Father, make me a blessing to someone today, through Christ our Lord."

May we all live that out daily - whether it's in offering a cold water bottle to someone having a rough day or helping your child learn to ride his bike. Let's just be a blessing to someone.

Nancy - I've never commented before on your blog, but I've read it from time to time the past year or so. I love hearing about your adventures on your farm!

I am a homeschooler with 3 boys who longs to move to the country, so I guess you could say we have a few things in common!

I wanted you to know that YOU were a blessing to me today through your encouraging article about homeschooling with preschoolers in the Homeschool Minute. Just what I needed to hear today! I needed to be reminded that God isn't expecting me to be Supermom; and to give myself a little grace while trying to teach my older two AND keep up with a curious, busy 4 year old at the same time! (example: it's taken me almost 30 minutes to write this comment because I've been interrupted so many times!) Blessings to you!

Great post. And, you're right. I think most of us do underestimate our roles. You know that I personally have struggled with that, but am now completely embracing the ministry God has given me . You can also add to your list the blessing you are on your blog and the "Minute" email. God has also shown me that even though I can't go on mission trips, etc., my work at home makes it possible for my husband and girls to be able to.
I stepped out on a limb at Bible study last Sunday. This is a group of 10 very spiritual, Godly (and older) people, hungry for more of the Lord. (James and I are the youngest by at least 8-10 years.) I talked about the perceived expectations of people in the church~how if you didn't teach S.S. or work on committees, etc., that you weren't serving; and how I knew in my heart that discipling our 4 girls was the ministry God had called me to. I got 10 amens, and so much confirmation and affirmation. Now if only more homeschooling moms could accept that, too!

Nancy...as always, YOU were right where God wanted YOU to be today. What a great, encouraging post.

By the way, did I ever tell you that Gregg and Sono Harris are from my area of Ohio (originally)? That they led me to the Lord, Sono discipled me, Gregg baptized me and they introduced me to my hubby?! Not to mention that when they started homeschooling Josh, he was the 1st homeschoole kid I'd ever known. Alex & Brett (& ALL Harris') are some of the finest people I know. Those boys truly ARE everything they seem to be. AWESOME teens! Awesome family.

Blessings from Ohio, Kim Wolf<><

That's a great post that you have written, Nancy! I am reading Do Hard Things right now and I am thinking about purchasing a copy for each teen in my church's youth group. It is a great book!
