Lessons Learned On the Farm

• Sep. 9, 2008 - The Post in Which I Actually Talk About Homeschooling

Joe (16), Jake (12), and Jon (7)

After delaying our planned start for a week because I was feeling cruddy and we were still juggling some outside commitments, we finally launched the Carter Family Homeschool 08-09 year. I didn't have all of the materials on hand. In fact, I hadn't ordered one single item - zip, nada, zilch.

But the time was right and with God's guidance we just dove in. I tend to battle with perfectionism at times, but it finally felt like it was time to just jump in there and see what God was up to.

I had tossed around a few ideas for our Bible time: having the boys do devotions separately and discussing them with them or doing our family bible study that we usually do on Sundays. But ultimately I found an old Alpha Omega Bible lifepac that wasn't quuuuuuite finished and decided that it would be a good fit for the boys and I to start with. It's always interesting to see what the boys remember about various Bible stories.

After that, (much to my own surprise) I found The Animal Kingdom from Answers in Genesis' God's Design for Life series ( I think I bought it two years ago and never used it!) and we began that science study all together. Jon loves animals so it's a great study for him, plus I'm using it to work on the older boys' note taking  and handwriting skills. I think it will be interesting for all of them, and will give the older boys another opportunity to learn the difference between creation and evolutionary science and develop their ability to back up why they believe what they believe.

Then they all do math separately. Right now Jake & Jon are both finishing their math books from last year while I wait for new ones to come in, but I've got Joe working through a practice SAT test just so he sees what that is all about. I think I'm going to use Bob Jones again for math for all of them and have Joe do Consumer Math this go around.

I'm also planning to use Learning Language Arts through Literature for sure with the two older boys. Joe is going to do American Literature while Jake will do the Tan book. I'm STILL undecided on what to do with Jon. The LLATL looks good for his age too, but I wonder if it might be overkill for both of us. I've got some items left over from the older boys that I could do with him including First Language Lessons (which I really liked with Jake). He just started reading at the end of last year though so I want whatever we do to be fun for him. Any suggestions?

Plus he's doing Handwriting without Tears and I still have plenty of the Winterpromise Animals and Their Worlds that he could do.

Other than that, I've picked books for each of them to read and once we get through The Animal Kingdom, we're going to switch gears and do my friend Joel King's Star Spangled State Workbook
together. I'm *hoping* hint-hint that he will also have his workbook for younger kids ready by then too so Jon can have fun right along with us! Plus I'm going to be incorporating the American History unit studies along the way that I received as one of the Schoolhouse Store's Deal of the Day.

So, I still don't have everything worked out perfectly, but I'm pleased with the progress we're making. We're off to a good start. Both the boys and I are having a good time and most of all, I feel the blessing from waiting on God's timing and guidance rather than just rushing in to get started simply because others did.

Well, I tried the LLATL Blue book (i borrowed the whole kit) and it worked for a while with my boy but he is a slow reader. All my others where not but that is okay. He is 9 now and we do a little of this and that, he likes the Alpha Omega Horizon Phonics. I only order the workbooks. I also do that with the younger ones with math. There is also a web site my small ones use and really like. I like it too, it's free but you have to keep track of where you are at on there. It has no login or passwords and has some neat stuff in their store also. It is www.starfall.com. My kids like the activity section also.

You've inspired me to do a similar post. I do get quite a few questions, particularly from non-homeschoolers, about what we actually DO on a given day.

I've seen the Handwriting Without Tears mentioned in several blogs over the last few weeks. I'm looking for something for both of my girls. Do you get just the student workbook, or do you buy any of the extras or teacher book?

Here's what I bought last year - Student workbook, Teacher's guide, and some extra paper. I mostly only used the student workbook, BUT the Teacher's guide IS handy if you've never done HWT before. It gives some extra key phrases that you can use with the student to help explain how to form the letters and goes into more detail about the methodology.

Just the workbooks could definitely be enough. They do give some information and arrows about forming the letters, but HWT is such an inexpensive program that I felt like the Teacher's Guide was worth the money.

When my eight year old was beginning to read I discovered the out-of-print book series, Dan Frontier. What a difference in his desire to read! All of the sudden the stories were about bears, wild cats, indians and cowboys, frontier stuff, log cabins, hunting--a delight for my little guy! :) We even used them for copy work sometimes. We also love the read alouds suggested by Sonlight, which we used our first year. Math by Horizons has worked well for us, we use tons of different resources for science and I LOVE the lapbooks from Hands of a Child. (using for history, along with read alouds and Story of the World. ) Thanks for your blog--I find it tremendously encouraging. SO wish we could move out to a farm. My husband is a pastor and we had 8 acres and woods and LOVED it but he was called to a new church where we live in town with about 1/8 of an acre!! Maybe one day we can get back to the land! :) So fun to watch your family's journey on the farm. Happy Homeschooling, Liz in PA

Happy birthday to Joe!

Congrats to the guineas...think they'll come teach my R to "be quiet and hide"? bwahaha

Sorry about the confusion on the Twins post. hahahaha That really cracked me up when I read your comment though. Who knows what it will do to my grandmother - I don't think she uses Bloglines so I should be safe. LOL

Happy Homeschooling Month.

Mel

The honest post is so refreshing. I love to read about "real" people and how they homeschool.
Thanks for the comment on my blog. You are right, we spent the day on the beach and it was just the relaxation I needed. It is the best therapy.

Hi, Nancy! I came over to visit from the TOS Crew. Our school year sounds like yours; ours was hijacked by free fruits and veggies, plus a late garage sale. Also, I buy curriculum that I forget I have; hmmm...which child can use this when...then which bookshelf is it on. We have four large bookshelves, plus a few other shelves we put books on! Which is why I'm giving away books at my blog. Brings traffic to my blog and blesses others! I look forward to working with TOS!
