• Sep. 18, 2008 - What a GREAT Time to Study Trees & Leaves!
Wow, did you all just get the Teacher's Toolbox? It's only for TOS subscribers, but I just have to tell you that this one is PERFECT for this time of year. If you were thinking of doing a leaf collection or just wanted to study the changing colors, you'll want to subscribe JUST to get this thing.
Michelle & Karen (who never blogs anymore sigh....) really outdid themselves this time. They've got two really great hands on activities for the kids to do with leaves. Tons of helpful links and some great links to products in the Schoolhouse Store. Plus instead of just one free ebook, this month, we have four!
I just about thought it was a mistake when I first downloaded the file, but it's not.
One is a tree booklet that you can just print for the kids to have their own special book about trees. I've got mine printing right now!
Then one is a 60 page ebook full of activities and worksheets focused on leaves. Kids will learn to identify the parts of a leaf, leaf shapes, types of leaves, and what happens to leaves during the seasons. It is SO good. We just took a field trip to a state park earlier this summer to learn about leaves from the naturalist there. This would have helped SO much!
The next one is a 41 page ebook on seeds. And it is amazing too. Kids learn what a seed is, how to identify them, their anatomy, germination, seed dispersal, and do some fun experiments.
And then the last one is REALLY cool. It is 35 crafts to do while you're studying leaves and let me tell you, you could just turn the kids loose in the yard with these suggestions and let them have fun. It's got instructions on making a little log cabin from clay and twigs, a yule log, a bird string nest, studying the rings of a tree, making paper, and lots of other fun ideas.
I just really appreciate Teresa from The Highlights of Homeschooling sharing those ebooks so generously with us!
I have found that these monthly Teacher's Toolbox unit studies just really help to give me great seasonal ideas for weaving hands-on activities into our homeschool and bring learning to life. Plus, they're FREE so they're easy on the budget, ya know?!
If you haven't subscribed before, but you really want this issue of Teacher's Toolbox, just subscribe and let me know. I can help you out with that!
