Lessons Learned On the Farm

• Sep. 23, 2008 - Music in the Homeschool

While we *enjoy* music at our house, we're not exactly the most musical folks in the world. As I was catching up on a bit of work today though, I really took a look at our September module - Music Mania.

Just look at the review:

As a die hard fan of the Schoolhouse Planner and modules, I look forward to each monthly edition. Each module is a new, fun and exciting unit study. This month hits the sore spot in my homeschool- music.

I’ve always wondered what exactly people do for music in their homeschool besides instrument lessons. I’ve discussed this with friends and gotten some light suggestions but never been able to pin anyone down to anything substantial. When we started this year we were stuck with the same question. How can we study composers and different kinds of music and make it fun?

The September module is a great way to start off the school year. The subject came up in our home and I was dreading my upcoming internet search for music and composer information. In, like Superman to save the day, swept the September module.

This module contains all the goodies of the usual Schoolhouse Planner Module but with musical content. You will study the composers, orchestra, and music styles with links to hear them. You will also get worksheets that cover the information they just studied. There are musical instrument making instructions, copywork pages with composer quotes, and my personal favorite- recipes. It’s crockpot pizza for dinner tomorrow night!

I’ll probably instruct my children right from the computer for most of these lessons so that we can utilize the musical links. Then I’ll only need to print out the worksheets and copywork. I could also envision making a child their own binder if they would like to have a unit study to work on independently. That’s one of the benefits of these modules. Make them your own.

I love how she says, "
In, like Superman to save the day, swept the September module." Too funny!

It's unbelieveable to me how much Marissa knows about composers from her Leap Pad. For some reason, she really took to the Composer book. She freaked me out the first few times that she spouted off information about them. She'd recognize a piece, and say, "_____wrote that....." Now when she starts talking about them, I hestitate, then say, "Oh yeah. Leap Pad."

I've got all of Marjorie Kiel Persons' Classical Magic books/CDs and they are a total hit with our family. R is practically addicted to them. :-)
