Lessons Learned on the Farm

• Jan. 3, 2006 - Update on Hank & a New Addition

Well, I really appreciate all of your responses about Hank.  It was so good to hear so many different opinions and to just know that other people understand our dilemma.

Through some divine interevention, Hank is still with us.  Tony would have taken him to the animal shelter on Saturday, but fortunately they were closed for the holidays.  Thus a good pal offered to let him stay at her house for awhile until we could find a new home for him.  However, she lives in town with a fenced yard and all of that change just freaked Hank the Cowardly Dog out.  He kept jumping her fence!  He wouldn't go anywhere, but he would just be laying on their side step whenever they got home.  Sooo they knew that things weren't going to work out there.

We brought Hank back home and continued discussing our options.  All of us were pleased when Tony decided that we could just keep Hank.  We will do our best to keep Hank inside most of the time and in our yard under close watch when he is outside.  We want to have peace with our neighbor, but realized that he was being unreasonable and that we had to establish some boundaries with him.  Sooo... Hank is happy and we are happy!

Now during all of this, we also found a dog just like we had been wanting for a year in our local paper.  Her name is Mary Jane (get it like Mary Jane's Farm....I just knew that she was meant to be ours!).  She is an 11 month old English Mastiff.  She is a huge lovable oaff.  She is already housetrained and knows some basic obedience so it's like we custom ordered her.  Our digital camera recently died, so I don't have any pics of her yet.  But they'll be on the blog ASAP!

Thanks again for all of your encouragement.

....living rurally has its MANY challenges as does living in the urban setting. I remain in constant "dog dilemma" as well. We have a dairy that joins us across the creek and behind us and I feel very "responsible" that we must keep 3 of our dogs penned for fear they will get into the neighboring pastures and begin running the cows........I would be mortified if something happened to one of their cows because of one our dogs!! But at the same time, one among many reasons we've wanted to live this way to have any number of pets and animals - for those domesticated pets to live at their leisure and not "penned".....
No, it is not picture perfect - but what setting is......I'll take the current challenges over the former suburbia we moved here from.

You are good to share this experience, Nancy, and I am glad to know others, like us, have their challenges, too. Hope things will settle down and all works out for the best.

God is so GREAT! Thank you for posting this. Even in the little things in the universe, He is there. Tony is so right. I didn't want to impress that attitude on your Birthday, but I will now. Your neighbor IS being unreasonable about the dog. our family would call him grinchy. Everybody is 'bout somethin from time to time. It's how ya deal with it ultimately that counts. YEAH for Hank! Oh and YEAH for Mary Jane~ I think most breeds of mastiffs are FINE dogs indeed. However, I must say, i am starting to befriend a boxer. If we get the farm, we are soooo getting a dog! LOL!
NOw we can really sing...happy Birthday to YOU!
