Lessons Learned on the Farm

• Mar. 31, 2009 - Hormones, woa,oh, oh, Hormones...

I've been thinking for years that hormones play a huge part in how we feel every day. I've read some really great books on the subject and have considered taking bioidentical hormones.

The other day, Mel, shared a really great link to 5 Tips for Balancing Hormones Naturally with Food. I thought that some of you might be interested in reading it too.

It's really sad to realize just how much "junk" is in our food these days. Animals are fed all kinds of hormones and medicines in order to get them fattened up and to market as quickly as possible. Realizing all of this was what started us down the path of organic gardening and raising our own chickens for meat and eggs.

Hippocrates said, "Let food be thy medicine, and let thy medicine be food."

I've got a loooooong way to go in this area, but I just keep reminding myself that every little step I take can help.

How about you? Have any of you tried the bioidentical hormones or had really good results from taking Iodine or Maca?

Hey Nancy,

Thanks for posting about this. I have been having trouble for several months now with my hormones not being balanced, and I have always been wondering what to do to help get them balanced. Can I just say that number 5 really hit home with me!

I miss talking to you and I hope you all are doing well. Thanks for all your bloggyness my dear friend!

I hear the bells & whistles going off in my head saying Hello, Wake Up, Why have you forgot this! (Avoiding refined sugar) (Right before I got married I went on a low-carb, more natural diet to lose a few pounds and it worked wonderfully!)
I've never heard of Maca, but I shall definitely look into it.
Somewhere along the way I missed or forgot about soy blocking iodine absorbution. I have hypothyroidism and have to take a synthetic hormone replacement pill everyday. The pill replaces the lack of my thyroid. I haven't felt "normal" in quite a while, even though blood tests say I'm normal. I bet that eating products that contain soy are causing my hormonal issues. Thank You Nancy (and the Lord for answering a prayer!)

Blessings, Suzanne

Thanks for the link to that article. I have no personal experience iodine or maca, but I definitely agree with the warnings about soy, sugar, white flour, and caffeine. I actually eliminated all forms of wheat for several months and found that to help with carb/sugar cravings.

I've heard that bioidentical hormones are not a good answer either. Though supposedly more natural than synthetic hormones, they still act more as a symptom controller rather than supporting your body to regulate proper hormone balance on it's own.

I'd love to hear more about organic gardening tips that have worked for you - especially controlling weeds and pests.

You've got me thinking I need to share my melatonin adventures from CA - and the thoughts my doc there shared with me about bioidentical vs synthetics. (Short form, he much preferred the former over the latter.)

I haven't tried the iodine et al yet, but that article I sent you really spoke to me and I'm hoping to incorporate some things from it myself. I have been using melatonin for about 8 months now to regulate my cycle (both sleep and hormonal) and let me just say it has been FANtastic. There was a little tweaking needed here and there, but it's still working, even with the amount of stress I've dealt with since October.

• Mar. 31, 2009 - great quote

I enjoy your blog! I don't know a thing about bioidentical hormones but I heard a great quote recently at a natural foods store here in PA.
"Good health is found on the farm, not in the pharmacy!" :) Still in the beginning stages of this journey. At this point I am grinding my own wheat and trying to grow a variety or berries (organically). My problem is we just moved from our 8 acres to a neighborhood with a tiny yard! (for my husband's new job) So I am trying to learn how to garden without much space! Thanks for sharing about your life on the farm! Liz

I've never taken any of that. But, we do raise our own beef. And sometimes I make my own bread without any dough conditioner or additives. I know I for one get very hormonal. I'll have to look at that link.

I have been using Arbonne's Prolief. It is a bioidentical hormone balancing cream, that you just put on like a lotion, (soft tissue areas, like the inside of your arm, neck, chest) before bed. It has totally helped me with the migraines I have been getting for over 2 years now, and to not feel so "emotional", really feeling balanced, and less moody. Love it, and highly recommend it so much that I am an Arbonne Consultant!
Blessings ladies!
