Lessons Learned on the Farm

• Apr. 1, 2009 - A terribly important question

This week's Works for Me Wednesday is Backwards Edition so I have a question for you all. It's terribly important.

What kind of mascara do you use?

I don't mean to sound shallow, but I really need to find a good mascara. I have horribly sensitive eyes and many mascaras make my eyes itch or burn.

I use mostly Arbonne makeup because it's botanically based, but I really didn't like their mascara's applicator. It required a two-step process and I'm a one-step (if at all) kind of girl. For a while I used Neutrogena Weightless Volume Wax-Free Mascara, but even it would start stinging my eyes if I left it on too long.

Then I got a rebellious streak and thought I'd just try Maybelline's Great Lash. I figured that if it's been around a long time, then maybe it's pretty good. But oh no, that was a horrible mistake. My eyes started burning as soon as I put it on. I threw it away immediately. Brand. New. (It was that bad y'all.)

So, I went back to the mascara aisle with my tailed tucked between my legs and figured I'd just have to spend a bit more to get something that wasn't going to make me want to pluck out my eyelashes.  I decided to cough up a few extra dollars and give Almay One Coat Waterproof Mascara a try.

Now, this one doesn't bother my eyes, but I have one little issue with it - You practically have to sandblast your eyelashes to get the stuff off! I've NEVER had this much trouble getting mascara off. I usually just use a bit of coconut oil to wipe away the mascara, but that wouldn't get the Almay blackish-brown off my lashes.

I decided that I'd cough up a few more bucks (and by a few, I mean $5!) and get the official Almay Hypo-Allergenic Eye Make-up Remover Pads. Even when I use those, I *still* have mascara left on my lashes. It drives me bonkers.

What's a girl to do?

I found this list of natural mascaras online, but I thought I'd see if any of you have favorite brands of mascara that you would suggest.

I used to use theirs all the time and really liked it. It's NOT cheap but it worked pretty well for me. :-)

Nancy,
I've used so many. Haven't found one I love yet. I used to love MK's mascara but not now. What I do love is their eye make up remover. But it's a hefty 14.00. But it's worth it.
Want me to send you some???

Hey Nancy. I so feel you pain. I have tried different mascaras, but none seem to be compatible with my eyes. No matter what I do, within an hour or so, my eyes are itching and hurting. I have come to accept that I am meant to just have dull tired loooking eyes.

Bare Minerals has a mascara that does not bother my sensative eyes or my sensative skin -- and it comes off when you wah your face (or when you fall asleep reading and do not take it off first. Oops.)

Hope this helps.

Grace & Peace,
Tammy

I am currently using Origins' Fringe Benefits Lash Loving Mascara. It was about $13 I think.

It is very gentle but I do not LOVE it because it is not cry-proof. And I cry all the time!

Nancy,
I have fallen in love with Bare Minerals makeup. It is pricy in the beginning. My mom always shares a QVC gift card with me for Christmas and I buy my makeup with it. The makeup last forever, and I love the way it looks on my face. I feel pretty, but not overdone.
grace and peace,
julie

I have been using the wash-off waterproof mascara from avon for a while now & don't have a problem. It washes off mostly with just soap & water. If there is a little bit the next morning under my eyes a dab of lotion gets it off.
I'm not sure if it will irritate your eyes or not though.

I have almost always used MKs mascara. After about a week of use it comes out of the tube beautifully. When my budget was cut, I tried Maybelline and love it.
As for the MK eye makeup remover . . . GET IT! It is, by far, the most versatile and best product out there. The product uses more than make up what it costs. You can put a bit on a QTip when removing just a little bit of ... anything, really. Or, use a cotton ball to get big areas.
My husband and I write messages to each other on the shower walls and on the mirror .. the only thing that takes it off nicely is MKs remover.
Good luck.
