Lessons Learned on the Farm

• May. 11, 2009 - The Blessing of Boys

Hope you've all had a wonderful Mother's Day.
Here's a little something I wrote for The Homeschool Minute back in December 2006.

The Blessing of Boys

Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate. Psalms 127: 3-5

Boys. Men-in-training. I'm blessed to be the mother to three of them. And I do truly mean blessed. Through these three young men, I have been privileged to watch a bit of God's finest handiwork. I mean they just start out as these precious little babies and then they go through this really messy, loud stage. Then they get a little older and the next thing you know they are carrying all the heavy stuff, fixing things around the house, holding doors open for women, and learning what it really means to be a man.

Of course in the middle of all that, they can just about give you a heart attack. Boys aren't content to just ride bikes - no - they have to "do tricks". They like to climb as high as they can in trees. They tear things up and get things dirty. They like to fish and hunt and want you to "ooh and ahhh" over the things they bring home. And all of it is part of the learning process. Learning to be a man. And as a mom, learning to let go. Learning to let them be men.

God has created them to be strong arrows - arrows that can contend with enemies at the gate. God tells us that they are a blessing to us and as we aim them in the right direction, they will go on to bless many others. Just keep reminding yourself of that during the messy loud years and enjoy the blessing of boys.

Having three boys myself, I can so relate! I've loved watching my oldest move into the more helpful, responsible stage (especially when something's weird on the computer). You sure are right about the loud and messy stage. It can get REALLY loud around here!

Some days I find myself wishing I had a girl to do "girl" things with; like go shopping, or do some crafts, or watch Anne of Green Gables with, etc. :)

But I really do enjoy my boys, and God knew what He was doing when He blessed us with all boys.

Hmmm. That's an awesome reflection. It's all girls around here, but it sounds like a lot of fun - especially once they start fixing things around the house. :)

What a great post. You said it perfectly. My two boys are both off at college now, and I've gotta say, there are no two people in the world that I admire more (ok, other than my husband :) ). All that love and time you pour into them is so worth it as you watch them become strong, honorable men who bless those around them. Thanks for the sweet reminder.

I just read your post, "The Blessings of Boys". It is just what I needed to hear today. I am the mother of 4 sons...ages 8, 6, 4, and 4 months. I guess we are going through what you called "the really messy, loud stage". I love these little men desperately...and my heart's desire is for them to grow up to be strong, godly leaders....lovers and followers of Jesus. Most days I feel so unbelievably inadequate to train them up. I know I cannot do it; it has to be God through me and my husband. My precious husband is not yet a believer (please pray for him.) I trust the Lord to teach the boys what they need to know from my husband through him anyway. God is big and He is totally capable of that. Anyway...thank you for encouraging me today. It is so loud around here...the walls literally shake...and it seems everything is broken at present--but only the material things. It is inspiring to know that this too shall pass...but also a little sad...because I also know that when it has passed, it will have passed. I don't want to get so caught up in the frustration of the chaos that I fail to seize the moments. I know one day I'll miss them! Blessing upon you and your husband and your young men. Jessica
