Personally I like to end things on a positive note and anticipating bad news can sometimes be as bad as the bad news itself, so I'm a fan of just getting the bad news over with myself.
But you can pick and choose which you want to read first. You'll just have to hold your hand over the screen and scroll if you want the good news first. You have ALL the control right at your fingertips.
Anyway.
Sigh.
Here goes:
BAD NEWS
I don't know how to break the news gently, but Little Red didn't survive the night last night. We thought we had her all nice and secure in the chicken tractor. In fact, at night Jake would safely tuck her into a dog kennel (the plastic kind with a metal door) within the tractor and then would let her out each morning. That's two layers of security folks. But apparently it wasn't enough.
Whatever it was, tore through our chicken tractor and then ripped that metal door right off the cage and made off with Little Red.
It was not a pretty scene to discover.
That predator is going down!
GOOD NEWS
Candace and her boys came to visit this afternoon and brought the Pioneer Woman's Key Lime Pie. I didn't even know if I would like Key Lime Pie, but oh sweet mercy, it was all kinds of good. And having a foodie friend who comes over with pie after you've lost your last chicken is pretty sweet too.
The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Job 1:21
Do you still have that night/motion camera thing? You could put out some bait and see what you are dealing with. For us it was a pack of feral dogs that tore through metal wire to get our chickens. I have the phone # of a guy out here in Cadiz that has chickens for sale if you want more. Sorry about little red. That's so sad :(
Ahhh, that key lime pie looks and sounds delicious. I love key lime pie anyway it's made. I'm sorry about your last chicken. I hope you get that predator/s. We live in coyote country (and cougar and bobcat country I've heard, but never seen) here, but with a solid fence on three sides and cows on the next and a good chicken coop, our chickens have been safe thus far. Do your guineas give you eggs? You still have those don't you?
I say time and good food heal all wounds. Glad you liked the pie. Hope you all catch the scoundrel that did that!
On another note, you need to post about all the statistics that Michael Smith talked about. That was some good stuff! And may be surprising to a lot of people.
I had to say first I love reading your blogs, your article in the Homeschool minute always makes me feel like maybe I am doing something right. THANK YOU! I appreciate your down to earth approach and wish you lived next door. :)
Anyway on to the predator, we live in Colorado (RURAL) and we had started milking a goat and had a couple others for company. Long story short we have had 7 goats since May - four of which are gone - two of them we found dead and the other two no trace. It ended up being a mountain lion and we actually were able to catch her. The Division of Wildlife trapped her on our property. For our two boys that was just about the best school you could ever imagine and then the rattle snake the next week was good too. :) However, it is sad to lose these pets although we have gotten a shed for our goats at night and they have been safe. Isn't life fun with animals this is a first for us but I sure hope you catch your predator!!!
Gosh, I'm sorry to hear about this, we have been enjoying living a bit vicariously through your family. I obviously, have not kept up very well. Let us know when you catch the troublesome critter who had the nerve to venture through your double security!!!
((hugs)) Oh, and glad you enjoyed the pie!
