Lessons Learned On the Farm

• Feb. 25, 2006 - What kind of digital camera do you have?

Do you like it?  Where did you buy it? About how much did it cost?

We are looking for one and since I don't have a subscription to Consumer Reports, I just thought I'd see what all of you bloggers had to say.

Mainly I'll use it for getting pictures of the kids, animals and scenery around the farm here.

We do want it to have pretty good clarity since we use our snapshots as our family pictures.  Just give me all of your best tips on what to look for in a good digital camera.

Well, you know my vote. The Kodak Easyshare. Get the most expensive one you can afford. When I shopped and did all the research this was the one I found to be the best all around. It came down to this one, the Fuji and the Olympus (comparable to the DX6490). I didn't like the way one felt in my hand and found the buttons to be in wierd positions so that narrowed it down to two. The guy at Best Buy told me that Kodak's software was the best and the most user friendly. I've never looked back. We have the Kodak Easyshare DX 6490. It takes great action shots and stops the action better than my professional Canon. It also has a movie feature which we use and the kids love. (PS I posted this so others would know too, I know we've already discussed this.)

My first was a Kodak Easyshare DX4530. I loved that little camera. I know I took more than 8000 pictures with it.

For Christmas, I got a Canon Powershot S2. It has 5MP and a 12x zoom. I LOVE IT!!!!! I also bought the 2x Telephoto Lens and .5x Wide Angle Lens for it. It also does movies, and has several shooting modes.

You can see a review of the camera here.

I bought mine at Walmart right before Christmas. Staples also has some good deals on them.

Blessings,
Amy Beth <><

I remember telling Kathy I would be shopping for a digital camera. She suggested I talk to her dad. Well, that never happened because I got impatient. So I did some research and bought a camera. Meanwhile, her dad helped her pick out a new camera. Guess what? Same camera! Kodak EasyShare DX7440. Great camera! Most of the problems I have are because I'm not a great photographer, not the camera's fault. LOL

Just stopping by to ask if you would please spread the word about Emily's surgery Tuesday morning? I have a prayer list on my blog for anyone who would like to take a specific time to pray as well.

Thanks,
Amy

Hey Nancy. Oddly enough we ahve been researching this as well, because I want a new one for my birthday. We have a Kodak Easy share and I hate it. What I have found so far is that, unless you are looking for professional quality photos, anything over a 5.1 megapixel is a waste. Higher MP give an excellent quality phot, but the camera can't hold as many photos. the 5 MP produce great quality shots as well. Also, the best recommendations I have found from users and photographers is that you can never go wrong with a Canon. I agree, since that is what my 35 mm is, and I LOVE it! Sony was also recommended to me. Another good tip I got from a photographer was to do some pricing and then go to a camera shop and see if they will match the lowest price. They usually include a class or two in getting to know your camera. We are going looking some more next week. Let me know what info you find.

We had a Kodak Easyshare and LOVED it! The picture quality and zoom were perfect! My only complaint was the size...I wanted something I could easily fit in my purse. So right before we left for our China trip, we got a Sony Cyber-shot. It has 5.1 megapixels and a 3x zoom. We sacrificed the zoom capability for the super small size of the camera (size of a credit card but slightly thicker). It also has the video clip capability. Besides the ultra-compact size, I love that you can just slide the lens cover up to turn on the camera, and slide it down to turn it off. Super easy! We got it on sale at Best Buy for $349, and then used a 10% off coupon and some Reward Zone points. :-) Just remember, as with any camera, you need to plan on buying additional memory as the memory stick these cameras come with only hold 12-15 photos.

Let us know what you decide!

Love,
Marsha

PS With the Kodak, the picture quality, software and the printer-dock were fabulous! My most fav pics were taken with the Kodak Easyshare-- so you can't go wrong with it. Look for sales at Best Buy or Fry's (if you have them in your area)...we had gotten ours at Fry's for only $200.

looking for the "right" camera! My oldest son is really into photography and here's a few tips he gave me as I look:
1 - Digital zoom is "used car salesman talk" for nothing - don't pay more for it
2 - Compare focal length and optical zoom (if you even want zoom, which we did because of our children's sports and plays where we're often a distance away but want "action" shots)
3 - He told me what several others have already mentioned - anything above 5megapixels is a waste unless you are going to have enlargements larger than 8x10 - If you want really large picutres, it matters, otherwise, don't pay extra for it
4 - Just as a note, he has always used Canon products and they have stood by them, no matter where they were purchased, so if you can get your choice at Sam's or Walmart, etc, you don't need to pay extra to buy from a "specialty" store.....
Good luck!! (BTW, We are still debating largely because we're trying to decide how much of our tax refund we want to spend on a camera!!) Let us know what YOU decide!!
