Lessons Learned On the Farm

• Mar. 9, 2006 - I'm shocked and amazed!

My 4 year old can type his name on the computer!!! This little guy hasn't been on the fast track for learning his ABC's, 123's, colors or anything else academic.  He's been gross motor all the time baby!

Last year, we did the dance of joy when he willing sat through a read aloud and began bringing books to us.  We've laughed over his desire to call red - hot, green - yoda, and the such. Fortunately I tend toward the relaxed/unschooling philosophy so I've been confident that he would bloom in those areas when he was developmentally ready.  He's a sharp cookie, we've never had to doubt that!

Well I was amazed the other day when my friend's THREE year old daughter could spell her name - a six letter one at that! And she makes a valiant effort at writing it as well.  We've worked with Jon a bit on writing his name, but he just never seemed too interested.

So imagine my surprise when we saw him typing in his name on a computer game!  The little guy who hasn't chosen to spell his name verbally or in writing, had watched his brothers type in his name on his preschool computer game for him enough times that he just picked it up. He looks at the keyboard and says while he types J-O-N - Jonathan!  Of course we still have to explain that JON doesn't spell Jonathan, but we still give him kudos.

Maybe it's the auditory (hearing his brothers), visual (seeing the letters on the screen) and tactile (typing on the computer) processes that have just kind of clicked for him.  Who knows? Maybe he was just developmentally ready.

All I know is that I see the spark that God placed in this little guy. And I trust God to flame the fires.  He shocks and amazes me.  Both of them do.

Hooray for Jon!!! Isn't it so exciting to watch them learn something new??? I loved watching all of mine learn to read and write. I love watching them now when a science experiment goes just right or a new algebra concept just clicks. Although I tend to me less patient than when they were little..hmmmm.......

I think your little guy typed his name because it's FUN!!! After all, why would everyone else in the house do that on the computer unless it was a fun thing to do? ;-)

hehehe...it's amazing what they pick up and learn and you have no idea they know it because they have chosen not to let you know!

Can't wait to hear more about J-O-N!

Love,
Marsha

Kids learning is always a miracle to me.... and it always suprises and fascinates me when they learn something new.. even though I should know by now that every kid can learn... I guess it's just the thrill of learning. That self-satisfied look they get in their eye when they accomplish something.... that's an amazing feeling.

Hi! I just received a back copy (Summer 2005) of The Old Schoolhouse and found you featured in the HomeschoolBlogger.com article. My husband and I have a dream to own our own little homestead someday and I was drawn to see what information you had to offer. We currently own an acre and a half, which is surely big enough to put some animals and a garden on, but we are in the military and will probably not be able to stay in this place for very long! I also homeschool my son and I have a daughter on the way at the end of April. I just started my own blog yesterday and I'm very excited to be a part of this community! I will check back often to see what new things you and your family have going on! I am envious of your day at the Amish auction. I grew up just south of Lancaster County and we used to take weekend vacations to the Amish country. It's one of the things I miss most about living on the East Coast! Thanks for your informative entries!
