Oct. 31, 2008 - Norwegian Kringlas
Lilliput Station Adventures is hosting a Christmas Party! My contribution to the party is the recipe for Kringlas that my great Grandmother,Nellie, brought from Norway. We have not had a Christmas without them! They are sort of a bread and sort of a cookie! I like them slightly warm with butter on top.
Norwegian Kringlas
2 cups sour cream
1 1/4 cups sugar
2/3 cup shortening
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 egg plus one yolk (save egg white)
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 to 3 3/4 cups flour(I sometimes add a lot more until it is formable)
Cream sugar and shortening. Add sour cream and egg and vanilla. Add flour a little at a time, baking powder, soda and salt. Refrigerate overnight. Roll into 1 tsp. to 1 tbsp. balls and roll out into into long pencils. May need to flour hands as mixture is sticky. Shape into figure 8s or pretzel like figures. Brush with leftover egg white.
Baking time: 5-6 minutes at 475 degrees
Makes about 60
Freezes well
Good plain or with butter on them.

Your children are adorable. We plan on trying this recipe out sometime soon. I've already printed it out so one of my children can make it.
