The Occasional Blog

Jun. 11, 2007
Who am I blogging for?

I was browsing through and commenting on some of my friend’s blogs the other day, and I got thinking again about my purpose for blogging.  I realized that many of my comments were about me rather than the people I was commenting.  This is something that I really want to avoid.  Why?  Well, I don’t want to blog for myself.  Ultimately, I want my blog and especially my comments to be encouraging and uplifting for other people.  I want to take interest in what other people are learning and engage in their lives, rather than try to get them to engage in my life.  I don’t want to try to get as many comments as I possibly can, I want to give as many comments as I can without expecting anything in return.  It’s SOOO easy to just leave a comment saying, “Thanks for visiting my blog!!” without really taking an active interest in the person that you’re commenting.

So, here’s my blogging challenge: do it for others, and not for yourself.  I need this reminder quite often!!  And I find myself falling out of that mindset in my regular everyday life as well.

On a totally different note, I'm going to be doing a Narnia trivia contest soon.  I'll be posting details in a couple of days!!  I've never done any type of contest before, so this should be pretty fun. :-)

TTYL everybody,
      Sylvia

Hello Sylvia! I was very excited that I'd gotten my 50th comment this morning...it was more because some other "random" (with God nothing is random anyway) acts happened. I happened to be the 4000th commenter on one blog and then went to another blog I'd never been to before and turned out to be the 3000th commenter on that blog as well. Was it selfish of me to be so excited about my comments? Phooey on you for being so hard on yourself...you are a very inspiring and encouraging bloggess!!! You probably only feel like you've not done well with blogging because you've bgen so busy with other things...like SCHOOL and bieng in the 4-H district thing, then the retreat thing you went to. YOU"RE GREAT and I hope you never feel any less than that! Much love in Christ~ Nancy

Wow! good point! Though some times I do reply to a comment, but I always try to comment about the post...

I can't wait for you contest!!

RYC: I agree with you about "if an argument has any anger involved, it loses it's value." Even the Bible says that it is alright to be angry as long as we're not sinning... I think the same thing is applied to debating. ; )

Love,
Jocelyn

Thanks for the comment. I like your story about your commenters too. I didn't use to care about comments at all, although they are fun to read it's not why I blog at all. It's taken me 6 months to get 50 comments, doesn't that say something. I think it's the hours I put in working on my blog and my girls blogs that keeps me blogging. I have been hung up on getting more readers and more comments but I don't feel like it's in an unhealthy way at all. So, I just blog and don't worry about the content meeting up to anyone's standards or about how many comments I get. It was just a fun morning, that's all.

I think you are one top-notch gal.
And... I think you already do leave encouraging comments! Though I do enjoy it when you relate something from your own life to a post of mine (or the girls'). It lets me know you read it and it did speak to you, which is why I blog.
be blessed Sylvia!

I don't read any new books, except The Lamb Among Stars Series. That one is good. It is a Christian fantasy in tradition of LOTR and CON. I really like it.
Please come by and see what new group has started on Blogland!!
Thanks for coming and commenting!!

Very good point. We humans like to focus on what we can get out of something (i.e. If I comment on this persons blog, maybe they'll comment me back) rather than what we can give.

Whoops, that's basically repeating exactly what you just said. Oh well. Maybe it will stick more now that I've put it in my own words.

RYC: Mom has been wanting to get chicks for some time and we're hoping to get them this week. How many acres you live on? We only live on a measly 2 1/2.

And, thank you for your comment... you're sweet!

Love as always,

Hello. I really liked your post. I've been thinking about that myself lately..about commenting that is. How I used to just be (hey. how are you) and not really talking about their post or what I thought. etc.
Also, the Narnia quiz sounds fun! I think I'm going to go mess with my template now! I'll talk to you later! bye!

Hey you! thank you so much for your prayers. I think it's really cool, you know, that you and me don't see eye to eye on every detail (lol) but we still got each others backs and we still pray for each other and everything. :) Anyway...yeah, btw loved your post!

Hey! I saw I had one comment on that post, and you know what I thought? "That's gotta be Sylvia!" And I was right!

We see tons of rabbits in the really tall grass and I never thought I'd be adopting any of them!

I thought everyone would like to see some pictures of them, so I posted them! Eric couldn't decided what to name Bugs at first, he kept changing them!
