Finally - Radical Homeschool Thoughts

As I'm sitting at my desk waiting for a return call from the pulmonologist, I decided to surf the blogs of some fellow Sonlighters.  While on my journey I chanced across this poignant post from Mother Joy.

Moms, there is an alternative.  Be brave, and realize that you don't have to let anyone force you to send your child to school. Except your husband, of course.  But pray.  God changed my husband's heart and he is now our biggest homeschooling defender.  But believe me, homeschooling your kid with a messy house or screaming babies or an inadequate teacher is better BY FAR then sending them off because you don't think you "can do it".

So often we are afraid to stand up and say anything to our friends and family with difficult public school situations because we don't want them to think we're being judgemental.  There has to be a time when we stand up and speak the truth.  The excuse that drives me insane...  "There is no way I could homeschool my children.  I don't have the patience."

When a child is struggling in school, there is an alternative.  It is time for more parents to make sacrifices to put their child's educational and emotional needs first!  And it's time for homeschoolers to stop being afraid of judging and come right out and tell these folks that homeschooling IS THE ALTERNATIVE.

I just read her blog tonight. I usually agree with most she says. I remember being afraid of hsing, and my baby was only 1st grade. I PTL that he brought us down the path. Here we are 10 years later. It has been good and bad and ugly, but always I am so thankful to hs my boys.

I am stopping by to say hello while HSB allows me to access pages. Usually I've been getting error messages.

You made me laugh. I'm one of those that said "I could never, I don't have the patience." Now, I'm homeschooling my two younger kids! It's been amazing and fun and all good. My 12 yo was having anxiety attacks every morning before going to school and it was breaking my heart. You are right, when people are struggling and their kids hurting, there has to be a way to mention homeschooling as an option. I just happened to have become recent friends with a woman who homeschools and so the idea slipped into my head. But if I hadn't been friends with her? I just don't know. You have made me think.
