To Tv, Or Not To Tv? That Is The Question.

Posted in Trina Tales

(Reader beware that this is one of my rare rants. If you would rather move on to another post, be my guest, otherwise suffer through and let me know your opinion.)

I got up this morning and decided to watch The Today Show. I don't normally watch tv first thing in the morning anymore, because I don't like what I see or what I hear. I was quickly reminded why I made the choice to steer clear of the boob tube. It's funny how the more you watch television, the more numb you become to it. It's not until you haven't watched in a while that your eyes are opened again. Otherwise, you just tune out all the garbage after awhile, and that is very dangerous.

The big turning point for me was when Regis and Kelly were having their Igougo contest, and my friend and I decided that we would get serious about trying to stay on top of the clues, and see if we could win. So this meant staying committed to watching this show every single morning for a month, even taking notes, so that if they called we would know the answer to the meaningless question. As I began to start this quest, for the first time, I really felt like I had to listen to every word, every sentence, and every thing they decided to discuss. I wrote down what I thought THEY would consider important enough to quiz someone on, and what I discovered is that they didn't say ANYTHING important. I truly didnt care about who was dating who, who wore what, who Regis went to dinner with, and all of the other nonsensical junk that they ate an hour of my precious morning with. I began to despise the show, in fact began to dread watching it. So I tivoed it so I could cut to just the show, and even that took too much of my time. I felt like I had made a verbal agreement to stick this out with my friend, and honestly it was the best decision I had ever made.

Why you ask?

That is an easy answer, because I realized all that I had missing and it wasn't much. Tv is full of self centered, materialistic, dishonest, non christian, rhetoric designed to consume your mind and hopefully your life, and it works. After awhile you don't even recognize how much time you spend in front of it, and how much you allow their thoughts to invade your mind and your day. You even become discontent with the realities and simplicities of life, because by the world's standards that isn't supposed to be enough. This small group of people, that have such a loud voice, dictate to you what success and happiness looks like. However, the real question you should ask yourself is, "If they have the answers that they proclaim they do, than why is the world so unhappy?" If they are so full of wisdom, why can't we just watch, learn from their wisdom, and find this thing called contentment?

Tv is a highly addictive, mind numbing, brain washing of lies. If it is so harmless, than why is it so difficult to shut off? If it's not an addiction, than why does everyone feel they NEED it in their home, and don't know what they would do without it?

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think that there isn't anything useful or entertaining on it, but I don't think we use it properly or only for educational purposes. I love the History, Learning, PBS, Cooking, and even some of the children channels. I say that loosely, by the way, because the majority of the time those have to be moderated too.

The media made up this phrase called, "politically correct", and I despise it. The truth is the truth, and you should never say something just because it is politically correct. If that were the case, and the Lord agreed with that theory, he would have been way more PC, and He would have skipped the cross all together.

Rant on. I quit the boob tube about 2 years ago. I just rented A&E's "Pride and Prejudice" from the local library. That's good viewing, in my opinion!! "Life" opens up wonderfully without t.v. :-) Mrs. K a.k.a. www.faithprints.com/krunchykorner

We gave up the TV for Easter when my oldest was 7. We had NO tv in the house for 11 years. No movies, no nothing. When Lance went to boot camp, John happen to go with me to Costco, and he was joyfully watching something on the tv on display. I have to admit, I miss all the sprots, and now he realized it would be nice to spend Sunday afternoons at home, instead of going to my mom's to watch football. We ended up getting the cheapest tv and the cheapest DVD player. I kind of miss having no tv, but we put it in the basement. And you know what? Nobody really wants to go down there to watch. Its like, you know....dark. Its actually a chore to go down there and watch anything. So, we hardly watch anything. Well, other then college football and Sunday afternoon games. Once football season is over, so is most of our TV watching. lol.

AND I DON"T NEED ENCOURAGEMENT TO SPLURGE!!!!! ROFL. Specially on shoes. I love shoes. My friend called for a lunch date tomorrow, and she is ready to go shoe shopping. I think I will leave my credit card at home!! ~mad

Gotta love that pictutre!! What appropriate one too. Even if you just watched Wheel or Jeopardy they throw in some awful commercials that shock ya! I've become a classic black and white movie watcher now. ;)
Have a great weekend!

This is my second post today where I think I could have written the exact same thing. I surfed the morning shows this morning (I'm sick with the flu) & I called my dh at work to tell him that the shows are all junk.

I found your blog through the random search button at the top right hand corner of the page. DH & I are praying about hs our 2 dd next year.

Sep. 30, 2006 - tv free times

We had a TV-free time in our lives for the first year of our marriage. I think that was a wonderful way to begin life together. We were 'forced' to spend time doing real activities together. We've had TV and even cable/satallite for the last 8 years of marriage but I have to say at this point it really doesn't have much of a hold on us. We can watch it or not. That's really a great place to be in, using the tools of the world instead of letting them use you.
Great post, Trinah!

We cut our cable 2 1/2 years ago. And, living in a valley surrounded by hills, we get NO channels. So, although we still own tv's, we can only watch videos/movies on them. I told the girls that someday they would thank us for it~ and although I haven't heard the words from them yet, they haven't complained either. It was the best thing we ever did for our family!

I sooo agree with you. I used to have shows that I thought I had to see, but not anymore. My husband will watch a little news, and I watch a little hgtv, but that's about it. Our life is much more peaceful without it. :)

Sep. 30, 2006 - I wholeheartedly agree!

My dh is almost completely off TV. He still goes over to his mom's next door occasionally to watch a bit of FOX news or maybe a Monday night game. I go over occassionally to watch home design shows. Thankfully we can both miss it without any problem! Staying off the internet though has been more difficult! :) When we went up to visit my sister I was amazed at what she and her husband thought was appropriate viewing. We used to have very similar standards, when we shared an apartment before we were married to our husbands. I think you are right. Most of the problem is desensitization. She doesn't even see the crass and unbiblical behavior because she is so used to it!
Our girls became much more content when they didn't watch so many commercials and fantasy movies!

Funny to come read this post because I have been mulling a post like this around in my own mind! My dh and I use to watch a lot of television. The only time the television goes on now is to watch a movie of our own or when dh needs to know the weather forecast. :)
What I have been thinking lately is how much more secure I am in myself in the Lord. Since getting away from images of the tv (even the most suttle images can do so much harm) I do not struggle with my self image....and I don't mean the whole "self image issues" that the world focuses on...my insecurity was in what the Lord thought of me. I so wanted to be lovely in His sight! It has been wonderful to be free of such insecurity....and to know that He finds me, His creation, lovely. Knowing we are lovely in the sight of the Lord can only come when we shut out the evil that tries to invade our lives. I don't want to be known as someone who has one foot in the world and that is how I felt when watching things on tv. I guess the best question one should be asking themselves, if they do watch tv, is (not a new one!) "Am I okay with the fact that Jesus is sitting right here next to me?" And really....there are so many other things we can be occupying our time with...things of the Lord.
Great post! :)
Many blessings!

Amen girlfriend! When I met my husband 4 years ago he didn't have cable. When I moved in with him (gasp) 6 months later I gave up cable. He said it wasn't a necessity for him, and cost too dang much. I tell ya what..if we had cable we wouldn't still be married. When we go stay at a hotel all we do is fight over what to watch, it's like there are too many options. We are content with our 4 (sometimes 5 if you stand in the corner of the living room) channels. We get PBS which is pretty great for Sarah. But other than after she goes to bed, the TV is hardly on. I can say that we will never have cable in this house, and if for some reason lose our local channels, then so be it! We actually do things as a a family! Which is WAY better than some TV shows in my book!

I just have to say."Wow!" to how many people either don't have cable or don't have television. I was stunned by how many said that they didn't. I am impressed. We still have tv and cable, but we have had quite a few discussions in our home about when, what, and how much we watch of anything. I am not a tv watcher, but my husband is. We spent many years without cable and just a few channels that we could pick up with an antennae, and I didnt miss it. In fact in was good for us. We are pretty careful with the television, but honestly most of it's garbage. =0)

Girl, I can not agree with you more!! I've been working on a post for about a month talking about this very thing. (I have about 20 unfinished posts sitting in my draft box! LOL!) Anyway, I used to watch too much television. It took me awhile to realize it and to realize that I had become desensitized to what was coming off the screen. So, we cancelled our satellite and I cleansed myself from it. I can't tell you how much it changed my life and my family's life. It's amazing how when I watch any television now, how blazingly apparent the sinful things on the screen stand out to me.

Great post! Amen!

Oh this was a great subject. I have been cable free for almost 18 years now.
I DO NOT miss anything that I have witnessed as the fruit of having one in a home.
This is one of my soapboxes, so I won't even go there. I know sadly, for alot of Husbands it is an issue. Thankfully, mine has never desired one in our home.
We are headed for eternity in a place called heaven, lets spend some time reading about it and getting ready for all it has to offer. Believe me, it's going to be a shocker when we don't find cable there! You Go Girl!
P.S. We do have a DVD and love to watch "The Walton " re-runs.

We do not have cable either and I don't know what I would do if I had it. Just leave the tv off I guess :o) Don't laugh at me but I used to be hooked on Regis and Kelly - I don't know why but I watched it EVERYDAY!!! I even moved my treadmill time to 10:00 so I would not feel guilty about just sitting in front of the tv when there was so much to do. I am trying to be TV free around here and managing more of what we watch during the day. Next I need to work on computer time!!

There is a company called Sky Angel that I would like to get, it's not expensive. At least when I was checking it out a few years ago =)

We have cable only because the cable company won't diconnect it, but we don't have the T.V. hooked up to it. We use dvd's and even that is limited. I just recently posted about t.v. too :)

My Sweets and I usually watch a Friday night movie and that's it for us. The reason why I have not subcribed to the Christian cable company is because I might start watching too much.

Great post and thanks for sharing.

About Me

Ohhh...what 5 boys can get you into! Join me on my daily journey with my beloved sons, and on being the Godly wife and mother that I am trying to be! I was married at 17 to my first true love when he was 18. I know it sounds crazy, but we had both of our parents blessings. I had my first son at 18, well almost 19. I am 35, and will be married a whopping 18 years in June. I was homeschooled as a teenager in the 1980's, and I homeschool my boys as well. We live on 20 acres, and we allow the boys to roam and just be boys! Life is good and we are HAPPY!
