Well we tried the Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons thing, and I still think it's an excellent program. I especially think it does a wonderful job of teaching sounding out words. But it just doesn't hold my attention for long.So I decided to see how the Alphabetti books from Progressive Phonics would go. I tried the other series with Jasmine, with excellent results, but I didn't know how the earlier books would go. They are new, and they aren't complete yet - however, what is there is also free :) So we tried the first book. At the beginning, the book introduces the letter/s that will be used in that book, as well as what sound they make, and then goes through the words that will be used in that book. Then the story starts. The story is lovely, and funny, and has lovely pictures. There is text that is small and black, for Mum to read, and large red words for the child to sound out - so the children can read interesting stories early on, without having to memorise harder words before they can sound them phonetically. So the first book introduces the letters 'd', 'o', and 'g', and is a story about 'dod' the 'dog'. The next book introduces the letter 'b', and a character 'bob', and the third book introduces the letter 'a', a character called 'bab', and the word 'bad'. I had thought that introducing all the similar-looking letters at once might be a bit tricky on the little ones, but at the same time, if they can get that, it'll just get easier from there. So a while ago we gave Savvy the first book. She's not four yet, so I really didn't know what to expect (although she did already know most if not all of the letters and their principal sounds, thanks to Stafall's ABC's page). And she read the book with me. And was very excited, and enjoyed the story. She got to colour in the accompanying colouring in page as a reward. She read that book on a couple more occasions, and when she had no problems with the words 'dod' and 'dog', we read through the next book. Again, she had minor problems, and they seemed to be sorted out by the end of the book. We will read this book a few more times before going on to book three. I'm just sad that they haven't yet completed this series; but they do have on their website the order that they intend to introduce the letters and concepts in, so I guess if worst comes to worst I'll just be able to continue teaching Savannah by writing my own little stories. I think I'll get her to draw the pictures though :) Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 85 of 281 } { Next Page } |
