Guess what? My baby sister is currently clear of cancer. Yay! She got her results this morning, and the cancer did not spread to her lymphatic system.Having been diagnosed once with a level two melanoma is still no small deal; she will have to have regular medical checkups for the rest of her life, and every second one requires her to travel two hours to a larger hospital. But that's far better than looking at treatment options now and a 50-60% survival rate! Woohoo! Yay Cassie! Savannah has been wanting to learn to read for a long time. In fact she's been worrying me by trying to guess at words when she tries to read, so I've been trying to teach her phonics. Unfortunately, Savannah is just a different personality to her sister, Jasmine, and the cheaper options that worked for Jas just weren't working. So we looked at the free trial of headsprout online. It appeals to Savannah's personality very well. She did the third lesson today, and was getting a little restless by the end but we can leave it halfway through and come back to it - I suggested it but she didn't want to. Then it turned out we were nearly finished anyway. So I think we'll purchase the program. It's a little more expensive than I would like, but honestly reading is the most important skill that you can teach your child, and it is foundational to all other school subjects. You cannot succeed without good reading skills - not without struggling a lot. I did email the company two days ago, since I've been burned before - I get all excited about a homeschool product, and then find out they don't ship to Australia. But I got an email back that very same day (pretty good when you take time zones into account) and they said that they do ship to Australia and that the free shipping policy when you buy all 80 lessons at once still applies. Guess what we're doing? Anyway, we'll redo the third lesson tomorrow before going on. I know the fourth lesson recaps on it, but I'd rather go slowly than miss anything with her. Besides, she is a little younger than the program is designed for - although she's probably better prepared than many older children who start the program. I've really been struggling with Savannah with a few behavioural issues lately, and it is just so exciting to have her ask me to do her reading lesson straight after breakfast, and to sit there with her at that time with no issues, and just enjoying each other and the adventure that she is having. Actually I'm feeling a bit down right now because the pregnancy is really pushing me to the limits and I'm not able to be the super wonderful mother I would like to be. It really doesn't help that Jai and Savannah decide to stay awake and get into all sorts of mischief until ten o'clock at night. This is a two and three year old! So I'm not getting much rest, that's for sure! Anyway, I have a very sweet husband. I started having pains last night and we talked about what I could and couldn't do. He went and did a whole lot of washing up for me, and talked about planning some simple meals that he can cook for me, since it's at night time that I really start to hurt. Isn't he sweet? He even went and sorted the washing into colour oriented piles for me, although being colourblind he put a few bright red shirts into the dark pile, but I'm not going to complain! He's a good man. And speaking of good men, although this time on a smaller scale, Jaidyn has successfully been potty twice today. I wouldn't be surprised if he teaches himself without us really needing to do anything. Which is good. It's funny, I was worried about toilet training my first boy, since I'd heard that they sometimes took longer to get it than girls do. But he's taken to it much easier than Savannah. I am 27 weeks pregnant as of yesterday. Yes I'm sure the ticker at the top of the blog is out of date; I did that one before I had an official ultrasound determined date. So I have 13 weeks to go. I do not think that I will go over the due date, because my latest baby so far was born on her due date. I hope I don't go over, since I'm not expecting to so that would really cause me to whine and complain - and I'm sure you don't all want to read that! So I've still got three months to go - but you know that doesn't seem all that long. And I'm just not ready at all. I feel like I should start a hospital bag or something, but I just don't see it happening. I'm also wondering if this birth will be a quick one. Well, comparatively so. My quickest so far was 4 hours. But you know, this is my fourth, so we'll see. This time Ken works nights to, so I'm expecting to go into labour at night time and have to call him at work. That stresses me a bit for some reason, although he doesn't work far away. The drive to the hospital would take longer. And who knows why they put the maternity ward on the sixth floor? And they lock the main entrance at night, so we'd have to go in at the emergency department... Anyway as far as names go, we've decided on Jacob. Although I'd like to spell it 'Jakob'. I found that spelling on some top 100 list of names, so the idea of new spellings for old names is definitely becoming a common one. Ken can't spell for nuts so I can just tell him whatever spelling and he'll think it's the traditional one - not that I would do that, of course! For some reason we've always agreed on a name together but the spelling has always been important to me. With Jasmine the issue was whether or not to end with an 'e'. Savannah was easy enough, it's a slightly rarer name so I didn't worry with its spelling. Jaidyn we found about five different spellings for; I think Jayden is the most common spelling, and there is a Jadon at our church. But I like Jaidyn. So now it's Jacob or Jakob. And whether I will win this discussion? We'll see. I can't wait to meet this little guy though. Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 78 of 285 } { Next Page } |
