Our Favorite Christmas Stuff

My friend made this for our lunch the other day, too good not to share!

Leiko's Fall Favorite Root Veggie Soup
olive oil
4 garlic pieces
2 large onions
3 or 4 carrots
2 or 3 sweet potatoes
misc zucchini, mushroooms, parsnips, potatoes, what have you
veggie broth or boullion
garlic powder, oregano, onion powder, salt and pepper to taste
good Parmesan

Saute garlic and onions in a fair amount of olive oil.
Add cubed carrots and lots of cubed sweet potatoes and saute some more.
Add zucchini, mushrooms, peppers and what have you.  Parsnips are good, other squashes, whatever you have handy.
Add 8 cups of water and 10 veggie bullion cubes OR pre-made, packaged veggie broth.
Let it come to a medium boil and stay there till all the veggies are soft.  The last few minutes throw in a package of Pastene pasta, the little tiny stars you can find.
Serve with lots of grated Parmesan and enjoy!

Guilt trips.

I am beginning to wonder if having a statcounter on the blog was a good idea.  And now I can't help but wonder what the counts would be if HSB had not had those old java issues and my original counter had kept working!  It actually looks like a get a fair amount of traffic on my blog!
Which makes me feel sort of guilty that I don't write more often.  Which makes me wish I had something to say worth writing more often.

Oh well.  I will endevour to supply those few faithful with something to read more often.

I DO have some news.  My bff taught Jenna to ride a bike on Monday!  Yesterday I took her to my Mom's and she rode all over that neighborhood like a champ!  I was so proud of her!  I'd be willing to bet she was riding it in her sleep last night. :)  The problem has always been that we have no safe place to practice riding a bike.  Now she knows how and Friday she is spending the day at Mom's and can ride to her hearts content.

Saturday is a CBD warehouse sale!  Naturally we are out of here at 5:30am.  My cohort in crime on these treks BAILED ON ME!!  Something about a "Men's Retreat".  I will just have to have a chat with the new head of Men's Ministries about checking with MY schedule before recklessly scheduling these things!
( he just left for the day but I will get him when he gets home boy)  Oh, congratulations honey on begin the new head of Men's Ministries. :)
So, anyway, my buddy Pam stepped in to save me.  I do NOT drive off Cape and so I get to go.  Whew!
We are taking a few other ladies as well as Rowan and Pam's daughter.  Rowan's first CBD sale!  I am so proud.

Ok, I was trying to post a photo for Wordless Wednesday and I am having trouble today.  I am out of time.
And naturally, I am going to feel guilty about it. :)

On the protocol of alarm setting.

We have writing class this morning.  This means leaving here at 9:00am.  On the nose.  I mean it.  Shoes on, book bag in hand, coat on, out the door.
NOT start looking for your other shoe, look for your folder to put in your bag and print out your assignment at 9:00.
Knowing it takes an hour from "get up" to hit the ground running, together Rowan and I set her alarm for 7:30AM.  It is 8:22AM.
18 minutes ago, I went upstairs to find her ........IN BED READING!!!!!!
I am astounded that we actually just had a conversation on the protocol of getting UP when you hear the alarm go off!!!
I mean, IF you have to get up at a specific time, and to aid in that you set an alarm so you do NOT miss getting up on time, would it not be the correct action to get up when the time arrives???  ( I know grammatical errors but, as I said, we have to leave here AT 9:00am)
My daughter decides that because she woke up prior to the alarm going off and began reading then, since she was awake, there was no need to actually get up when the alarm went off.
I am loosing my mind. (And my good humor isn't far behind!)

On the renaming of the cat...

I decided I didn't like the new cat's name.  Wildfire is a stupid name.  Wifi, while cute doesn't really work for me either.  Plus, it isn't like he knows it very well.  He has only ever been around people a few hours a day and they had their hands full.  So, I am pretty sure we can change his name without undue or unfair trauma to the cat.
On announcing this to the kids, Rowan was all for it and Jenna absolutely against.  I always liked my husband's tactic in this regard, "name it anything you like, I am still going to call it__________"
3 days later, we have decided on Frodo.

I'm sorry if this seems critical but something is really bugging me.

And this is a fairly new phenomenon where I hang out but it is a disturbing one.  Every day there are more and more posts on my message boards with atrocious spelling and grammar.  Maybe there are boards out there where that isn't a big deal, but this is a homeschooling board.  Where people who are teaching their children hang out.  And it is not like I have never made a mistake but you can go in and edit a post and if I have made a spelling or other error, I always go in and change it!
Other people feel the same way, I know they do. Someone even mentioned that "alot" is two words the other day because they keep seeing it used like that!
This morning I sat down with my first cup of coffee and the first post I saw read, "Whose on Facebook?
ARGH? ACK?  Is it just me?

"I am the grammarian about whom your mother warned you."

Meet the new member of the house!

Yes, I know, I desperately wanted another Siamese.  Really I did.  And that is what I went up to the shelter for, the Siamese female they had on Petfinder.  I was there when the door opened at 10am.
The Siamese was gone.  WiFi was there.  He had been there for a whole year.  I spent an hour with him, then let the girls in to spend time with him and it was all over.

Meet WiFi

I am fairly pleased with myself

I think the blog is looking pretty decent.  I still need to change the black border and I really wish I could figure out how to make a banner at the top for the title, or I suppose I could remove it completely.  I actually just used completely because I couldn't seem to spell "altogether" !  Oh, sure now the spell check says it is ok, well too bad, I am not changing it now.

Ok Red Sox fans, sue me.   I went to bed in the 5th inning.  It was looking pretty dismal and I would rather listen to my All Creatures Great and Small on audio that watch the seeming humiliation of the Sox.  Mike followed shortly after at the top of the 7th.  (I know, a sports post, seriously?  From me?, I bet you didn't even know I know what a "top of the 7th" was did you?)
My sister just came up to tell me they rallyed at the bottom of the 7th and won and lecture me on how you NEVER give up on the Sox.  Blah, Blah, I am still glad I went to bed.  Chapter 30 was hysterically funny.  James was careening about Darrowby in Siegfreid's car with no brakes.  Funny stuff.

There is a plethora of activities available to me  Saturday.  The humungous clothing sale at Saint Barnabas is going on, at 2pm you can go and fill a bag for $5!  There is a Cranberry Festival down the road so, weather permitting, great time to go play photographer.  I am kid sitting for a friend in the afternoon, 3 boybarians ( to steal a line from Camy) and we love them.  Mike is going on a golf/lunch thing with the men's ministries group.  I am happy for him, he stinks at golf but her really enjoys it and never gets to go.

I am still waiting to hear from the animal shelter about a Siamese cat I need.  Ok, he needs me.  He is 4 and male and blue-eyed and cross-eyed and beautiful!  In my never ending quest to find another "Lucky",  I am going to adopt Chopinski. I will keep you posted on how it goes.

It's been a good week school-wise.  Almost great really.  The kids have worked cheerfully and well on school and chores and I love when that happens.  Rowan actually is enjoying the PBS Medici we are watching for school in the evening.  It is extrememly well done and even Mike liked it when we watched it together at supper last night.  Last segment is tonight.  I must say I have learned a great deal from it.  You think Medici and you think primarily of Cosimo and Lorenzo, I don't think I ever even picked up on the 2 Popes being Medici let alone Catherine of France.  I love history, I do.  I love when a new connection is made even in my aging brain.  It still excites me.   And oh hey, did you ever know where "The Bonfire of the Vanities" came from?  I never did until yesterday!

Best of all, there will be new episodes of Stargate Atlantis and Primeval to watch!  While I knit industriously, of course, one can't be idle.

Just around the corner are the holidays....

And I had yet to figure out what we will be making this year for gifts.  Rowan and I are knitting a few things and I know who is getting hats but other than that I was at a loss.  My dear imaginary (board) friends to the rescue again!  Some genius thought of posting a thread asking what everyone is making this year and lo and behold the perfect gift idea was in there!  I can't tell you what it is because some of you reading this are getting one!  But is is awesome, and more to the point, inexpensive and doable.

Last year we had so much fun making knitting needles out of dowels and putting the cutest sculpy ends on them.  We beeswaxed them after sanding them and they were adorable.

Last year we also ditched regular school and did a month long advent study which I posted about regularly during the month.  I really don't think I have it in me this year.  We did crafts and baked and I actually made it through only slightly less sane than I was when we began.  I do want to do the Jesse Tree devotions again.  Maybe I will feel ambitious enough to do a week.  Maybe.

I do know that we will be knitting and listening to homeschoolradioshows holiday collection.  It makes such a wonderful tradition.  I think I will let Rowan go through my holiday cookbooks and plan to cook something for Thanksgiving for her very own.  Lets see, how much time do I have......
