Fly Your Flag

Fly Your Flag

I just wanted to take a moment to stop and reflect on today's date and what it signifies for our country.

Six years ago this morning, I was running a little late getting ready for the day. I was watching the Today show while getting ready. In the middle of a piece about something of little consequence, Matt interrupted with a breaking news report about "a small plane flying into one of the towers of the World Trade Center." They cut to a live video feed. As we studied the images, one of the anchors, I don't remember which one, made the comment that it looked like more of a passenger jet than a small private plane. Suddenly, the video panned around as another plane - obviously a commercial plane - came hurtling through the sky and straight into the next tower.

Our world changed.

The next few minutes, hours, even days were filled with stories of tremendous courage, utter sadness, and confusion. Listening to the 911 calls of the people desperate to escape their situation; hearing about the rescuers who gave their all in the hopes trying to reach them; the bravery of the passengers of the jet who decided they weren't going to allow themselves to be used as a weapon.... It was all so foreign to us - something we, as Americans, had never experienced before. In a way, the sheer magnitude of the tragedy was numbing.

As the years have passed, many seem to have forgotten or allowed time to dull their memories of those days. I hope I never truly forget the sacrifices of those days and those who continue to stand in harm's way in order to protect us from having another 9/11.

State testing score

Posted in Homeschooling

Today I gave Hermione the released version of our state's math test from last year.  All her friends had been very stressed out about the test, and they complained frequently of its difficulty.

She did the whole test (math portion) in 20 minutes and only missed one question.  And, when I asked her to reread the question, she immediately noticed her error and told me the correct answer.

If she were in PS, she would have easily achieved commended performance level on this test, something that only 32 out of our home campus' 169 kids achieved.

The funniest thing was when she asked,  "Was that all?  I was expecting something much harder."

She was frustrated with what she viewed as the author of the test's attempt to mislead students into choosing a wrong answer based on an oddly worded question.  It never tripped her up, but she didn't think it was fair to students.

Another travel update

We've heard again from the traveling inlaws.  They're in a university city that is new to both of them. They've had the chance to meet several new friends and feel they've planted seeds for others to come along and work with.

It sounds like their health is good, and they're keeping up with their strenuous pace.

They closed their latest e-mail with the following message to those supporting them in prayer:

As you can see, your part in this continues to be vital and effective.
There isn't time or space to tell you all experiences, but we try to
highlight most of them for you. Each day brings surprises and challenges
that you help with more than you know. Thank you so very much!

Travel update

The in-laws have changed regions within the country they're visiting.  Along with that comes all the hassels of changing currencies and getting used to a different climate.  They've changed altitudes as well, and they're reporting that it is really chilly.

Apparently, it is more difficult to make personal contacts in this area.  They're visiting some friends from their town in the US who live in the town and learning by observing the other family work with the local population.

Later in the week, they'll be taking a small plane trip to another different region.

FIL didn't say anything about his foot continuing to bother him, so that sounds promising.

Thanks for your prayers along their journey.

Prayer Request

Please excuse the filtered nature of this post.  In order to ensure the safety of everyone involved (primarily in-country contacts), very little specific info can be shared.

My in-laws are currently overseas visiting friends my FIL met on trips over the last few years.  There are a few requests they'd like me to share:

  1. Please pray for their stamina.  It sounds like they're having very long event-filled days.
  2. My FIL injured his foot before they left on their trip.  He has medication for it, but do to their "business," it seems to be troubling him again.
  3. So far, they've had several fruitful meetings.  The friends they've been able to see again have matured far beyond what they'd expected.  They've also met with others who continue to be curious about what has brought them to their country.  Please pray that they are able to make contact with their friends - both old and new.

Thanks so much for your prayer support.  I'll keep the blog updated on their trip, and then I hope to be able to share more details after their return.
