I just wanted to take a moment to stop and reflect on today's date and what it signifies for our country.
Six years ago this morning, I was running a little late getting ready for the day. I was watching the Today show while getting ready. In the middle of a piece about something of little consequence, Matt interrupted with a breaking news report about "a small plane flying into one of the towers of the World Trade Center." They cut to a live video feed. As we studied the images, one of the anchors, I don't remember which one, made the comment that it looked like more of a passenger jet than a small private plane. Suddenly, the video panned around as another plane - obviously a commercial plane - came hurtling through the sky and straight into the next tower.
Our world changed.
The next few minutes, hours, even days were filled with stories of tremendous courage, utter sadness, and confusion. Listening to the 911 calls of the people desperate to escape their situation; hearing about the rescuers who gave their all in the hopes trying to reach them; the bravery of the passengers of the jet who decided they weren't going to allow themselves to be used as a weapon.... It was all so foreign to us - something we, as Americans, had never experienced before. In a way, the sheer magnitude of the tragedy was numbing.
As the years have passed, many seem to have forgotten or allowed time to dull their memories of those days. I hope I never truly forget the sacrifices of those days and those who continue to stand in harm's way in order to protect us from having another 9/11.
