Sorry I haven't been around. We sang this hymn yesterday at church, and I started thinking about this, my favorite verse. It's a perfect anthem for a warrior. This is one possible way of interpreting it.

Be Thou my battle shield, sword for my fight -
Give me the strength to do what I need to do.

Be Thou my dignity, Thou my delight -
Give me a warrior's spirit of dignity and joy.

Thou my soul's shelter, Thou my high tow'r -
Give me hope, protect me.

Raise Thou me heav'nward, O pow'r of my pow'r -
Help me to grow in Christ
or
If I die in this battle, take me to heaven, where I long to be.

Aaah, can't believe I missed commenting on this post! But nice to see you back.

That stanza isn't included in the hymnbook at our church, and it's a shame, because I like it. Nice paraphrase.
