Choices we choose

I have had this on my mind for a long time.  It is our choices that make a difference in this life.  We can choose to work or stay home.  We can choose to be honest or dishonest.  We can choose to give God all of us or we can hold on to what we call self-sufficiency.  For us, we choose for me to stay home with the children.  I am very satisfied with that choice.  I could work.  I have the ability and knowledge needed to get a job.  But, since I have made that choice, I don't feel it's right to ask the government for help with food or housing.  I am very frugal and can make do.  I can grow my own garden, cook from scratch, hang out the laundry.  I have found that paper towels are a luxury.  I can make my own rags and use them just as I would a paper towel, then throw them in the laundry and use them again.  Rags also make great wash clothes.  Some are better than others.  People are usually willing to give you their rags.  Many people wouldn't think of making old sheets into wash clothes.  Old pickle jars make great drinking glasses.  Keep the lids and the kids always have a place to keep the bugs they catch.  Of course, you don't have to keep them after the bugs have been in them, just buy another jar of pickles.  Also, our garbage never goes to waste.  There is always an animal that will it what you are throwing out.

We also have a choice in how we react to people.  We can only control ourselves, not others.  Can we make other people work, be honest, be respectful?  All we can do is set an example before others and hope they will choose to work hard, tell the truth, treat others with respect.  I do find smoking cigarettes is an excuse to get out of work.  For some reason, working hard and smoking cannot be done at the same time.  But, can you stop someone from smoking?  You can legislate all you want, but it will not change them.  They have to change themselves.  They have to make the choice to change.

God gave us free choice.  That is how He wanted us.  We have to make the choice to follow him or not.  No one can make it for us.  We can't even make the choice for our children.  Just as God lets His children make their own choice, we must let our children make their own choice.  They cannot ride our coattails into Heaven.
