Aug. 17, 2007 - Life is Learning
My son is Elijah the Unstoppable! A new super hero around town who has the secret power to learn anything and everything (whether or not I've planned it).
I decided to take a day off because we met my dad for a birthday lunch, but Elijah had other plans. Here's what my little self-directed learner has been up to:
Bible-- Listening to about one hour of scripture on CD this morning while playing with his blocks
Geography-- Pointing out the United States map at Staples and showing us where Texas is. Playing a geography game on his Leap Pad (in the car).
Math-- Determining how many cupcakes we needed to purchase. I told him that Simon and I didn't need one, so he subtracted two and gave me the final count!
Reading-- On the way through the town, he told me, "MOM! Kids eat free on Mondays at Jim Dandy." Now, we've never taken him there before, so he looked at two signs (and read them) to put that information together.
Music-- He figured out how to play "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"
Spanish-- He sits on the loveseat right now working on his LeapPad Spanish!
Social Skills-- I sent him (solo) over to the florist to ask if the balloon boquet was ready. I heard him say, "Excuse me, are the balloons for my grandpa ready?"
And, making a birthday card for Grandpa this morning including all kinds of learning:
Handwriting
Spelling
Art- Layout and Design
Fine Motor- Coloring/Cutting/Pasting/Folding (he made an upside down matchbook while I was in the shower and stuck in on the back of the card! My little lapbooker makes me proud!)
He wanted to check out the new pencil sharpener (I bought an electric one! OH HAPPY DAY! Every homeschooler needs one!), but I told him his daddy will have to explain how it works, so I guess that could count as science.
Is that about how much they learn in an average day at Kindergarten?
Should I mark it as a school day?

OH YES!!! Count it! I love it! I was just saying tonight to DH that I just LOVE homeschooling! Isn't it awesome?!?! :)
Thanks for the compliments on the picture on my blog. I tried to make it my avatar on the FIAR board and couldn't get it small enough...if you have any suggestions let me know. I did save it as an "avatar" on photobucket and it still wasn't small enough??
