"...for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven." (Proverbs 23:5b)
This proverb brings a rather humorous image to mind, but it can also be a sobering truth to those of us who are directly affected by this fact and see no income coming in to replace it. At the same time, though, verses like this one keep popping up in my head:
"I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." (Psalms 37:25)
When a man does all he can to get a job to provide for his family and nothing comes along, all we can do is put our trust in God and turn to His Word for reassurance.
First of all, we know that God expects (and commands) a man to work to provide for his family:
"For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat." (2 Thessalonians 3:10)
"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." (1 Timothy 5:8)
"Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase." (Proverbs 13:11)
So, since God requires this of man, surely He will give him a job to provide his family with their daily needs. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus tells us how that our Heavenly Father feeds the birds and states, "Are ye not much better than they?" He also mentions our clothing by reminding us of the beautiful flowers that He clothed the grass with and then says, "shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?" He goes on to instruct us to "take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? ...for your Heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things."
We don't know how God will bring this all about, but we do know that it will all work out for our good. (Romans 8:28)
Please share any other verses that you can think of that will help build up our faith and trust while we patiently wait on the Lord.
Thanks!
