We interrupt this regularly scheduled program to bring you a little old-fashioned fun...
Pulling taffy!
Here's our 8-year-old stirring the sugary concoction:

Here are Norman and me, pulling the taffy:

Here is the finished candy, just waiting to be broken up and enjoyed:

And, here is the recipe, in case anyone would like to get their gang together for some old-fashioned fun, too:
Aunt Ella's Taffy
(sugar: 2-1/4 c. = 1 lb. / corn syrup: 1 c. = 12 oz.)
3 lb. recipe:
6-3/4 c. sugar
4 c. corn syrup
3 c. heavy cream or milk
2 t. unflavored gelatin
Vanilla or other flavoring
5 lb. recipe:
5 lb. sugar
5 lb. corn syrup
1 qt. heavy cream or milk
4 t. unflavored gelatin
Vanilla or other flavoring
Mix sugar, corn syrup and cream together in large pan. (You can either mix the dry gelatin with the sugar or add a little bit of water to the gelatin in a small dish to dissolve it and add to cooked mixture later). Stir taffy mixture constantly over low heat until temperature reaches 260 degrees. If gelatin powder wasn't added at the beginning, add the dissolved gelatin now and continue stirring until temperature goes back up to 260 degrees. Pour taffy into buttered plates and set out in cool, dry air. When it cools off enough to handle and hardens up a little, start pulling. Once the color gets lighter, add vanilla or other flavoring. Continue pulling until taffy is light-colored and "crawls". Lay out on wax paper. Tap gently with knife handle to break into small pieces. Store in cool, dry place.
