"B-R-R-R!!!"
No, I'm not cold. Well, actually I am, but I'm referring to the name that I gave our school day on Friday. J With all of the snow and the frigid temperatures that we've been getting, we were starting to show signs of cabin fever. We all needed a break, but I didn't want to scrap school altogether.
I still wanted to consider it an official school day, so I tried to think of things that would allow us to still get in our 3 R's... Readin', Ritin' & Rithmatic. I also decided to keep our daily Bible reading. Thus, was born our "B-R-R-R" day! J
Here's how it went:
B = Bible reading & memory verse
R = (This activity actually involved both reading and writing.) We started out with each one of us having a piece of paper and a pencil. I said, "Go!" and we all put a sentence at the top of our papers. We then passed our papers to the right and that person added another sentence under the first one. We kept writing and passing the papers around until we had both sides of the papers filled up.
As some of you know, I have a very reluctant writer in our midst. And, as was expected, he balked at it when I first told him what we were going to be doing. And, as expected, when the papers got to him, he at first just added, "And then..." and passed the paper on to the next person. I quickly put a stop to that and included the rule that each person had to make a complete sentence. It wasn't long before he got caught up in the stories and was actually having fun (which is also expected since he has a very creative mind). The stories were very, very silly and sometimes didn't make any sense (to me, at least), but the boys enjoyed doing it.
R = For our arithmetic, we played Equate. It is a board game designed similar to Scrabble, but uses numbers to make equations that connect instead of letters. This was also a fun thing to do, but I'm afraid that our oldest son is very much like his dad. He doesn't just plunk down his tiles to keep the game moving. He studies all of his options before coming up with the best solution and most points. And yes, he skunked me! J

• Feb. 4, 2008 - Great Idea
What a great idea you had. I'll have to try and come up with something like that.
