Keep on Keeping On...

Many firsts happening here

Hi all!  I am a divorced mother of an 8 year old and a 9 month old.  I am homeschooling for the first time this year.  My son has had health problems in the past (nothing major - just requires too many missed days of school) and last year he was in the "Homebound Program" where a teacher came to the house twice a week for a total of four hours.  Boy wath that an eye-opener!  She came in and told him what his assigments were for the week and she administered all tests, and gave him his dictation lessons.  That's about it.  Oh!  She also would read any Science or Social Studies lessons out of the texts - if it wasn't more than a page.  That is all she did with him.  I requested a copy of the lesson plan from his on campus teacher and that is the only reason the Homebound teacher started doing the Science and Social Studies.  I was absolutely furios when I found out that she was not even covering everything she was supposed to.  I completely understand that with only four hours a week, she could not possibly do it all, but to simply come in and tell him that he would need to complete this, this, this and this and she would give him his tests on it in three days -- come on.  I learned real quick how to teach him.  The homebound teacher took credit for his being on the honor roll for the first 6 weeks, when he was still on campus and had never met the homebound teacher.  Whew!!  Can you tell I am still a little frustrated over that experience.

Since the Homebound experience, I have learned from my son that he is being bullied on campus repeatedly.  I knew of a couple of occasions, but was led to believe that it was accidental injuries due to rough housing.  I truly believe that I was deliberately led to believe that because the school knew tha tI was leaning toward pulling him out of public school and therefore they would lose that money.  The principal of the school even told me, when he went on homebound, that she didn't care what it took as long as she got the money for him being counted as present.  WHAT?  I have learned so much about restraint these last three years in public school. <>

I am confident that I can provide a good, probably better, education for my son (and daughter in the future), as long as I have a good curriculum and/or create one.  I am open to all comments that any of you fellow homeshooling parents have.  However, I do anticipate this blog site being a sounding board of frustration for a little while as we get in our "groove" of things.

Thank you all in advance for your patience with me and pray - please pray - that this will be pleasant from the start for us all.

Hello!

Welcome to HomeschoolBlogger and welcome to homeschooling! Your story is sadly familiar, so many parents have experienced the public school's lack of caring and desire for money. Don't worry, we'll let you rant and rave!
