On Our Journey Westward

Nov. 20, 2007

A Bad Day

Well, it happened.  We've been working towards this for a while now.  We had a really bad homeschooling day.  You know, one of those days Todd "The Familyman" Wilson  describes in his cartoon book.  The husband comes home from work to find mom missing in action.  After several minutes of searching, he finds her locked in a dark closet in the fetal position!  I guess our day wasn't that bad, but it was close.

I'm convinced that people (including children) who are immeasurably blessed, take their blessings for granted.  To not know what it's like "on the other side of the fence" seems to blind you to how wonderful your side of the fence really is.  My children have never known sitting for hours on end in a public school.  They've never known sitting for hours on end in front of a dvd teacher.  They've never even known sitting in front of textbook after textbook on a daily basis.  They have no idea what a cool mom I really am.  I don't say that in a boastful way!  What I mean is that they have no idea how exciting and wonderful their days really are.  They don't know that not every child gets to do experiments, lapbooks, field trips, nature walks, cooking and art.  They don't realize that not every child gets to sit wherever they want to do their work.  They don't realize that not every child gets to take the day off on an unusually beautiful day in the middle of winter.  They don't realize that not every child is free to spend the afternoon grooming and riding horses.  Believe you me, I tell them how blessed they are.  Sadly, they just don't get it.

I'm not down for the count - just frustrated.  I'm not giving up on them either.  I know they'll begin to understand their blessings as the get older.  I'm just so tired of the whining and complaining.  I wish there were a way to help them to see  - really see - how wonderful their life is.

We seem to go through a season such as this every year about this time.  The holidays are coming.  It's time for a school break.  Yesterday was the feast at co-op.  It's always hard to lasso my kids back into schoolwork after a special day like yesterday.  Top that off with all the junk food they ate and I know why today has been "one of those days."

After my, ahem, "mommy tantrum", I went to my room to fold about seven loads of laundry that have been piling up.  I heard a lot of ruckus in the kitchen, then complete quiet for about 20 minutes.  Soft footsteps came to the door, then a little knock.  The door opened a crack and through the crack came a folded peice of paper.  That 20 minutes of quiet had been spent writing an apology note.  They gave me great big hugs and led me downstairs to a wonderfully cleaned kitchen.  Yes, there's hope for them yet!   I suppose there's hope for me, too.

We've been dealing with the EXACT same thing in our household lately! Perhaps it's the holidays coming that makes us so aware of this selfish behavior in our children. In fact today, I was at my witts end the same way, thinking "they just haven't a clue how blessed they are!" And like you, I've thought "why are we stubborn humans like this, everything has to be learned the hard way." No matter how much talking until I'm blue in the face that I do, my children just don't get it either. But, yes, mine too realize when they aren't "getting it" and will scramble to write that apology note or suddently get a dose of real good behavior going on; for while at least! I guess the truth is that God must feel that exact way with us as we do with them, so I find myself as frustrated with my behavior as I am with theirs. Thank God we have an understanding Savior.

Aww! I know how you feel! I've had plenty of those days. I just take a "staff day" and make it a holiday, regroup my thoughts, work on my creativity and prepare for a good next day.

At least it ended well. That's so sweet!

OH, how encouraging! My kids are still young, but I know these days will come. To have them come around with an apology is fantastic.

I could relate to your entire post. I don't know what it is about mid-November that gets everyone whiny about school.

Their apology letter I'm sure was precious and worth saving for the next time.

Happy Thanksgiving,
In gratitude for your blog and friendship,
Linda

... you are doing a GREAT job training them to have soft hearts. And showing them how to respond correctly when you are miffed, "go fold some laundry"! No tantrums... no throwing plates!!! Just fold some laundry. LOL

Thanks for sharing!!

Wow! That is really sweet that they "made up" to you. It is too bad that they can't really understand how blessed they are. You are right, you do go above and beyond what most even homeschool parents do (I wish I had half your energy!), and I wish you didn't feel taken for granted, but take heart in knowing that you will be rewarded for you hard work, it just may take years to see it. But as with all children, it just takes awhile! Take care! Your doing a great job! :)

We are all truly blessed, aren't we?? Our children never realize all that we do for them. I've been reading a book "An Excellent Wife", and it's really opened my eyes to what I should be doing for my family. Yet, I often think, "what are they doing for ME!!! Being under the weather these last couple of days we've taken off school, however, did we?? The children had to still do their chores, they graded some papers, we painted some props at church, we cooked 4 pumpkin pies, sewed buttons on some costumes, and i plan on teaching them to sew on a sewing machine soon. Did they get out textbooks? Sit all day trying to learn while in a crowded class room? No, they did not, BUT, did they learn, absolutely. Praise God we all have bad days!!! Why, cause we know there are good days ahead. Love notes from our children is the best thing in the world. One day they will get it, and I sure hope i'm there when they get it. I will give them the biggest huge and kiss and be glad God has given me an awesome family. Cheer up, there are better days ahead.

Kids can do that can't they? Drive you insane one minute and to tears of love the next. Wonder if God feels like that with us?

Oh wow, what wonderful children you have!

Ahem, I could use a bad day like that every once in a while. :-)

Marsha-- who makes it a point to point out the schoolbus to my boys on certain mornings (like when they whine about not wanting to get out of bed so early-- yah, starting lessons at 9am is SO early!) and afternoons...

That just blesses me to hear that from you. It hasn't been too long ago since I had one of my own bad days like that. That was so sweet what they did!

About Me

Welcome to my blog! I'm a homeschooling mom to three of the sweetest children - 11, 8 and 1. We use a very eclectic style - mostly Charlotte Mason mixed with classical. We love unit studies, lapbooking and notebooking. And books, books, books! Personally, I love to encourage and inspire homeschoolers new and old.
