On Our Journey Westward

My Mind is About to Explode!

Posted in Home

Okay girls, I've tried.  I really have.  I've cut coupons every week for a few months.  I've poured over the CVS and Rite Aid ads until my eyes cross trying to earn the most ECB's and Single Check Rebates.  I've made lists of what to buy from each of the three area groceries and even paper clipped the appropriate coupons to the appropriate lists.  I've scoured the shelves for hours to be sure I'm buying the right product and the right amount.  But, I'm here to say that my brain can't take much more!

I *might* be saving money, but at what cost??  My sanity??  :)  So, from now on, I'm just sticking to the good ol' cheap store brands.  I'm only buying things if I need them, not simply because I can save $2.00.  I'll only use coupons when they're handy.  And WooHoo - do I ever feel free!  :)

My hat goes off to you ladies who save money as if organizing sale ads and coupons is second nature.  If only I lived closer to some of you, maybe I could come for a class!  But, if I have to go it alone (with three kids in tow), I'm throwing in the towel.

I ran across a post from Large Family Mothering yesterday that was on this same topic.  She gives some practical ways to save money without  the hassle.

Jan. 16, 2008 - I can relate!

Kudos to you, girlfriend! First, for trying. Second, for flying. I used to do coupons pretty diligently in CA because I had a store that doubled them. Can't find that here in KY. So I buy store brand most of the time. I am a stickler for only a few name brand items and I try to look for those particular coupons. I discovered that even with coupons and sales, sometimes store brand is still less expensive! So, girlie, fly, be free, and have fun shopping!!

I hate coupons. They're not worth the hassle, IMO. Bulk shopping is how we save $ around here.

Ok, that last comment didn't sound as friendly as I meant it. I meant something more like... coupons, who needs them? Too much cutting, too much sorting. But still, they can be happy if they're for candy, right? Happy, happy coupons, not hateful. Sigh. Someday I will learn to read and write in the English language.

Jan. 16, 2008 - Coupon Queen

This is hilarious. Miki and I have been discussing this lately. She's on the CVS train and coupons.com and telling me how much she saves each visit. I'm the most unorganized woman in the USA so I'd rather spend the money than think about coupons. She's trying to transform me. So far. . I've printed off a coupon for a free appetizer from Friday's. :) haha. My mind is still on eating out! I think I'm a hopeless case for her. I'll have to share your blog with her about this one!! Woo Hoo!! Someone in my corner!!

I can't get into all that couponing either. I find that the more I cook by scratch the more money I save.

Jan. 17, 2008 - So there with ya

I can so relate to what your talking about. I've tried all different kinds of ways to save money, but I found out a few things.

Sometimes I was buying things I really didn't need, but they were a 'good deal'.
Driving all over the town was costing me more in gas then I was saving
Just staying at one store mostly ( PTL for SuperWalmart) and buying store brands, saved me tons.

We also are not a pre-made or pre mixed family. So alot of things that come out on coupons or such, we just never used. I tried doing that Grocery Game and sometimes you could get things REALLY cheap, but it was stuff we didn't eat. LOL.

Planning menu's out and sticking to the list are my best savers.

Jan. 17, 2008 - I love coupons!!!!!!!!

My first post to your blog. :) Aren't you proud of me. I had to laugh. I'm known for couponing. The girls have always teased me "Hey Mom can we go here, do this there, eat here, buy that.... Oh wait, Mom do you have a coupon for that?" :) Tis true. I am very much an off brand person - sticking to only name brand on certain things - like my paper products :) - but if I have a coupon and it makes it cheaper than the off brand I will use it. Basically I stick to the Sunday ads. Wal-Mart will match ANYONE'S prices. If you have the ad to prove it then they will match. I save well more than the $1.75 it takes to buy the Sunday paper. You can even access all stores ads on the web and they have these shopping lists where you can click on the items you are interested in buying. I even take those lists to Wal-Mart and they honor them. It is worth doing that. Coupons - not so much - except eating out and certain expensive items. But price matching - it is the way to go! You have a great blog Cindy! Have a great trip to the conference. Wish I could go. Cathy Glass

Our grocery stores don't put coupons out very often any more. Instead you have to become a 'member' to get their sale prices. I've found it easier to shop regularly at just a couple of stores and that way I save time and energy.

Jan. 19, 2008 - The Grocery Game

Posted by WisdomBuilders
I have NEVER been a coupon person before and I hated it...until I found the Grocery Game. I'll post the website on my blog. You pick a store, just ONE if you want, and you cut the Sunday Chronicle ads. Then you log onto the website and print out a list of which deals are the best and what coupons to use. No thinking on your own--you just follow the list. I've been doing it about 3 months now, and it is SO worth it. One time I saved $52 and spent $53!! That's not that unusual. It cost about $10 every two months, plus the Sunday paper. I am just NOT one of those people who will work my behind off to save a buck, so if I'm bragging on it, it must be easy!

Don't be discouraged! You know when I first started doing the CVS extra care bucks (ECB's) program I was pretty overwhelmed. If you are going to continue with CVS, I suggested just doing one or two small deals to earn some ECB's. Once you earn a few, you can then learn to roll them over weekly. It took me a little bit to get the hang of it. I was in CVS twice yesterday and I only spent a little over a $1 on both visits purchased about $80 worth of merchandise and I earned over $89 in ECB's.
I also second the grocery game. It is so easy. You can get a trial subscription of four weeks for $1 to see if you like it before paying the $10 every two months. So far for me it has been worth it.
