What Ever Works

Feb. 11, 2008 - What Ever Works... the beginning

What ever works.  What ever it takes to educate and to grow up these boys.  Although I guess this is technically not really the beginning.
The beginning was long before I carried these children in my womb.  Long before schooling was a choice to be made.
The beginning was those little bits and pieces that turned me from a public school teacher to a homeschooler.
The beginning was the seed that was planted by Richard Prytowsky in freshman lit at a little junior college in the early 90's.
The beginning was hearing of my teacher friends dealing with junior high'ers who did cocaine off the toilet seats in between classes - just in case someone came in they could flush the evidence quickly.
The beginning was having 4th grade students that no one had noticed in 4 years of school that they could not read.
The beginning was holding those newborn babies and knowing that I wanted to keep them close and safe as long as possible.

And the beginning was every story read, every picture painted, every leaf explored, every loaf of bread baked.  The beginning has been all of these days.

This blog will be my sounding board, my record keeping and my idea catchall as we near the magic Kindergarten year.  Since my oldest turned 5 at the end of 2007 we have been getting the innocent question about "school".  I have had to coach Z on how to answer those questions.  We won't debate or defend our choice to homeschool but we won't hide it either.  We are homeschoolers and we are proud!
