Columbus Day

Today is Columbus Day.  We did not take the day off from school like PS did.  We did our regular studies and then had a short lesson about the holiday and a craft.  It was interesting to me and I think the kids had fun.  I'm still not quite sure why it's a holiday, since Columbus didn't really "discover" America, he landed in the West Indies, by accident.  So why is it a national American holiday?  My research led me to find that it was an Italian-American pride thing back in the 1700s.  Whatever.  It's on the calendar, I figured I needed to teach the kids what it was and why the kids on our block aren't in school.
Here's a pic of our craft and a few of the books we read:

FTR, It's also Canadian Thanksgiving today, but I thought that would just confuse them. lol
