Peer pressure

Occasionally peer pressure is a good thing.  This week, it's a wonderful thing!
My son is becoming a reader!
FINALLY!  WOOHOO!!
He's never been a bookworm like his sister.  He likes to look at the pictures but wasn't really interested in chapter books yet.  Reading for schooltime was difficult for him.  It didn't come easily and he's be resistant to it.  He'd complete his assignments, but never want to read more than what we required.

Lil has been reading through the Magic Tree House series and done her book reports about each one.  We've collected books 1-24 and she's in book 20.  J never showed interest.  I knew they were a little beyond his reading level, so I didn't push it.  We stuck to early readers and books about sharks (sure to keep his interest).

Well, apparently J's best friend has started reading MTH books.  He's been very enthusiasticly telling J about the stories and it's peeked J's interest and sense of competition.  "If A can do it, so can I".  J has been on a reading mission this week.  He's excited about reading.  He's been found several times, tucked in a corner reading all on his own, unprompted.  He hasn't fought me about our daily quiet time, in fact he brags about how many chapters he read.  He's finished book 1 and quickly moved on to book 2.
It is such a blessing to see him enjoy reading, whatever the original motivation was.  I have been struggling to find books that would interest him, but now, because of the enthusiasm of a peer, he's become a reader.  PTL!
