Sep. 24, 2008 - We Love Reading!!

Every night during the week, before we tuck the boys in for the night, I read to them for about an hour.  (although, we have gotten carried away and stretched into two!)  We just finished reading Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  Both of the boys really enjoyed it.  I was kind of surprised that even my 3 year old understood the majority of the story and asked lots of questions and contributed to some discussions we had. (I hate to brag-but hearing him pronounce "Almanzo" is just down right adorable, too!)  I'm always guilty of underestimating the level of comprehension my little ones have-they soak up and understand a LOT more than you may think!

I read last year sometime while I was randomly browsing blogs of a lady who started a Reading Journal when her kids started kindergarten-just to keep a record of all the books they read.  She kept it up through out their school years and when they graduate, they'll be able to look back at all the wonderful books they read and memories they created as a family.  So, copy cat that I am, I started one this year too.  :)  We finished our Farmer Boy page today and filed it in our notebook under the Family Read-Alouds section!

We've already read the first chapter of our next book:  Rascal, by Sterling North.  We should finish that one pretty quickly.  Now...to ask the readers-do any of you have suggestions for good books to read to little boys????  I've got a TON of ideas of books to read to my daughter, but am having a harder time finding good ones for the little guys!  Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Sep. 25, 2008 - reading material

I have a hard time finding books to interest our boys too. I have found so far that they love anything about animals. We read a disgusting book today about a polar bear tearing apart its prey! I saw that you finished Farmer Boy. Have you read any of the other books in the series with them? We just finished Little House in the Big Woods, and the boys really enjoyed all of the hunting and farming in that one too. ~Denise

Sep. 29, 2008 - Books for boys

So glad that I read your blog today! I have a few ideas on books for boys:
Little Britches by Ralph Moody
Man of the Family by Ralph Moody (these two books were one that my mom-in-law read to Joe when he was a youngen.)
The Bears of Blue River by Charles Major (Justin loved this book! He didn't want it to end!)
Uncle Tom Andy Bill by Charles Major
Miss Pickerel Goes To Mars by Ellen MacGregor (funny book)
Peanuts for Billy Ben by Lois Lenski
Key to the Treasure by Peggy Parish
Whitey's First Roundup by Glen Rounds
Thor the Moose by Rhoda Leonard and William S. Briscoe (there's a whole wildlife adventure series by these two authors: Gatie the Alligator, Sleeky the Otter, Skipper the Dolphin, Tawny the Mountain Lion, Bounder the Jackrabbit, Ruff the Wolf, and Arctos the Grizzly. I don't have these, though.)
Happy Days on the Farm by Ella H. Hay
My Father's Dragon (there's also a few other books, same series) by Ruth Stiles Gannett
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Might want to try Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn. Those are good too. Hope this helps! ---Ann

Feb. 2, 2009 - books for boys

I realize I'm commenting on your old blog, but I just read the recommendations that Ann gave you and I'm bookmarking this page! Some other good books for boys that the library has are the Billy and Blaze series. They may be a little young for Caleb, but great read-alouds for Benjaming, especially if he understood Farmer Boy! Full of adventure and horses.
