WholeHearted Homeschooling

March 10, 2006 - Enjoying the Load of Little Ones

Just a few more thoughts about lifestyle.

Moms with lots of little ones are always writing me because they are overwhelmed with the load they bear. They wonder how they're going to get everything done, and give their children the education they need. I understand what they are feeling, and have beentheredonethat, too. Even so, I had to make a decision of my will and train myself to understand that, if that was God's will for me, then it would behoove me to accept it and rest in it. By that I mean that if God has you busy with little ones, it's okay to choose to enjoy them, love them, play with them, feed them, and keep them at home. Lots of little ones means, without question, lots of work, messes, and interruptions. But that is how God has designed family so those children will have the solid and stable foundations they'll need on which to build a life, and you provide that just by being a mom who is enjoying life and living it to the fullest with her children at home. God has you right where your children need you!

Read aloud to your children whenever possible, making it a habit every day to curl up with your children and books. Have some simple Bible devotions and pray with them. Plan some interesting activities and field trips that will give you things to do and talk about. I think that there are far too many choices available now if you are a homeschooler. Looking at every possible curriculum can put a mother under pressure to feel that she is not doing enough for her children. The unfortunate result can be filling up hours with busy work. But love, personal mentoring, reading great books, working on projects, doing chores, and discussing great ideas was enough to create genius in the lives of Thomas Jefferson, Michelangelo, Bach, Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill,C.S. Lewis, and many others. Despite challenging issues in their upbringing, often less than perfect lives and training, and the absence of the perfect curriculum or great educations until later in their lives, they all turned out pretty good. The thing they all had in common was someone who loved them, believed in them, and filled their emotional cups at an early age.

God is not wringing his hands in heaven with worry that you will choose the wrong curriculum, or leave a workbook unfinished, or miss a day (or week, or month) of schooling. But he is looking to see how you instill faith into your child's heart, and a love for others, and a heart for wisdom. Start with those, and the rest will follow. That's how he has designed us.

I am so happy to have found your blog. Thank you for your words of encouragement. You are so correct. It is easy to get caught up in the latest and best curriculum, or attempting to keep up with what Mrs. So-and-so is doing. Somewhere in the midst of it all, we loose sight of what's really important - heart training. There are days I struggle. It seems we can easily get the basics done (Bible, math, reading & some writing), but the other things don't always happen. That's when the discouragement sets in for me. Thank you for reminding me of the real reason we are home educating our children.

Blessings,

Angela

Dear Sally,
I'm so excited to find you here! I sent you a few emails but didn't hear back and I know you're SO BUSY, and I was afraid you were tired of me bugging you to start a blog. :-) So funny to find you actually started it a long time ago! I'm thrilled and will check your notes often! Blessings to you, and I am praying you will find the perfect home soon.
Love, Misty

I have been having a really hard time with my homeschooling lately. I've been doing it for over 10 years and I'm feeling like I'm missing the mark somewhere. So I have backed off and I have been feeling like the Lord saying to me to back off the formal schooling and do more reading and cuddling and character training. I'm looking forward to reading more posts!

These words are a tremendous encouragement and much need reminder.
I have a growing disdain for the workbooks and curriculum that distract me from enjoying these young years to the fullest.
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom!

I just found your blog and really enjoyed reading it. Thanks for taking the time to encourage us with small kids. Mine are 7,6,4,2. And yes, there are days that I feel like I'm going to never get anything done. But the days I rest in God's perfect plan for me and my family are my happiest. And I need women who have gone before me to encourage me. Thank you for that.

You may have taken a bit to get started, but when you did, you did with a bang.

As one of those mothers of (very) young ones, thank you. This was just what I needed to hear today (HS convention in one week and two days!). :)

This was such an excellent reminder for me. My insticts tell me these things, but sometimes I need to hear it from someone who's been through it already. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom.

And I am so glad you are blogging! Your books have been a tremendous encouragement to me.

I am so glad to see you here on Homeschool Blogger. Your insights have been so helpful to me. I attended a big book fair recently and became all stressed out over the choices available, comparing myself, etc. God's path is one of peace and simplicity. Thank you for giving us "permission" to focus on what really matters :) Can you tell I am a first-born?

Loving this blog as I get more snippets than just in the email newsletter. These bits of encouragement are always timely and a boost to affect my perspective on the day's activities and relationships with the children.
So glad that you are home and for the moving of God in NZ and Australia. I am praying for a home for you.

Hi Sally! Just wanted to say thank you for this encouraging word today! We have been homeschooling for 6 1/2 years now, but just recently we are changing the way that we go about it. This post today was confirmation of things that the Lord has been showing me about letting go of "curriculum" and just living and learning with my children. (We have four precious ones, dd almost 11, ds 7, dd 4 this month, and another ds who will be one tomorrow!)

You have been a blessing in my life on many occassions through your books. I've read them all as well as Clark's Heartfelt Discipline. Excellent. I've often thought of writing to you, so I was pleased after reading your newsletter this morning to see this link and find your posts! I'll look forward to coming here from time to time to read your blog.

Blessings,
Lisa

oh sally how your words give me comfort and encourage me to keep pressing on. i especially appreciated your comment on the importance of giving love, exposure to great books, good meals, quality time ect. to our children verses worrying about curricula, the quantity of work sheets completed ect. we have three older children and just had a baby about 7 months ago. this year has been the most challenging of our 3 years of homeschooling. we have been on a roller coaster ride of ups and downs when it comes to accomplishing much in the last 5 months. between nursing a baby when he's ready:), sickness, and trying to managed all the other duties of the home its been interesting. yet i know this is only a season and i'm trying to enjoy it as much as possible, mostly because this preciuos baby boy was a suprise and has been so fun to have in our family, but also there is much to learn if only i'm willing to be still and learn. as i read these words it seems so small compared to the guilt i have felt at the end of the day when the house is quiet and all are asleep. there are times when i wonder "what am i doing" yet all that is gone when my oldest son says read more mom and we have that choice, or when i see my 4 year old engaged in a great book on the floor and then asks a great question(if he were in a pre-school somewhere he might not have the freedom to do this or i would miss out on the beautiful memory) thank you you are a blessing.
