Roses and Tea

Apr. 19, 2007 - Our Wedding Story

I love Blogging, its really stretching my ability to write. I have always wanted to keep a journal and somehow couldn't make myself do it. I am keeping all of these entries for DD and my grandchildren. So here we go......my wedding story.......

1. Where/How did you meet? The morning he arrived in Brazil, (for his one year stay) at missionary's home. We were having a class. We girls, looked at him in amazement....For he is veryyyyy tall. I said, "Wow! I will never marry a man this tall." I can't believe my mouth!!!!!! (Never say never!)

2. How long have you known each other? 22 years

3. How long after you met did you start dating?
3 months

4. How long did you date before you were engaged? About 2 months

5. How long was your engagement? 3 months

6. How long have you been married? 21 1/2 years

7. What is your anniversary? November, 30th.

8. How many people came to your wedding reception?
I think about 120 - 150. Not sure.

9. What kind of cake did you serve? Homemade white cake, rich coconut filling, and cream frosting (sort like a whip cream icing. Very rich)

10. Where was your wedding? Manaus, Brasil

11. What did you serve for your meal?
We just had a very simple wedding reception. Just cake and Guarana (our national soft drink)

12. How many people were in your wedding party?
6

13. Are you still friends with them all? My best friend since 5 grade. The others, only when I go home, and if I bump unto them in church.

14. Did your spouse cry during the ceremony?  No, but He was so serious during the service. He said he wanted to make sure he meant every word of what he had to hear and say. I just savored every single moment and laughed sometimes.

15. Most special moment of your wedding day?
Wow, I savored  every moment! The whole service was special. One that stands out more, was walking down the aisle with my brother to the altar. I never thought I would get married. I was not the most popular girl in the youth group or school. One other special moment was before the wedding, three saints (older women) at my church came to help me and DH decorate for the wedding that morning. It was so nice to have them there, their wisdom, support and love meant so much.

16. Any funny moments? We had many...... think about this couple for a moment.... she does not speak English and he barely speaks Portuguese....When was time for DH repeat the wedding vows, the minister was saying them very fast, so DH asked him to repeat slowly, then DH could not say a word so the minister said it in English.....I guess for most people was the kiss, because my DH is soooo tall, and I am sooo short. But, that's OK, God ordained it, this way.

17. Any big disasters? The cake......  When the sun goes down in Brazil, it cools off a bit, so, we decided to have the wedding after sunset.......Surprise, surprise, surprise......For the first time in my State, we had our second day of "Daylight Saving Time (DST)  It was still bright and beautiful, and the hottest day of the year. The whipped, sweet, cream icing was becoming very popular at that time. My good friend, who was a professional cake decorator and instructor, (and procrastinator) decided to assemble the cake at church, because it was still hot. Well, can you guess what was happening????? All I remember is, I did not want to look at the cake, or take a picture of it. I tried to bypass it, as if I did not know I had one ;) It would have been such a beautiful cake, the color of the cake matched the color of my flowers.  I wanted it very simple and elegant, cream on cream. Well, it looked-like ice cream melting on a cone on that very hot day and the fresh flower falling like melting snow. I was terrified back then. I do wish we had taken pictures, it would give the grandchildren a good laugh one day.

18. Where did you go on your honeymoon?
We did not have a fancy honeymoon. we went to a motel for 3 days. For in another two months we would have to make a trip to Rio de Janeiro.  We traveled from the Amazon region, along  the Atlantic coast of Brazil, by plane and by bus to Rio de Janeiro. It was a beautiful trip. I had to acquire my Green Card and documents at the embassy there. It lasted about 3 weeks.

19. How long were you gone? See previous question.

20. If you were to do your wedding over....
I would make sure of the calendar, and the weather. I would hire a professional photographer, and have a video of it. Since I did not have it all, I will make sure we have it, for DD's wedding.

21. What is your song? "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles. DH, would often sing for me.

22. Describe your wedding dress
: My dress was borrowed form a friend. It was beautiful, the latest. It was white with a hint of cream.  Low back, covered by a sheer lacy.  The bust and sleeves had pearls about every inch or so...... Two layered skirt with the one on top pleated and a small train. My bouquet of flowers and my tiara had the same pearls on it. I did not carry fresh flower. At that time in Brazil, we had wedding boutiques, they made beautiful satin flower bouquets and tiaras. ( I still have them)

23. What kind of flowers did you have at your wedding?
I really wanted lots of roses, but I was very content to have very beautiful, long steam, single petal, light cream color Moms. I had lots and lots of them. I understand, one would not use them here in America. Things were a little different in Brazil. We had to take what the florist had to offer as far as price is concerned. One nice thing, we paid for everything in cash.

Well, I see you finally were able to sign in. Great entry! Cake sounds yummy. I love coconut. We are going to the zoo today. I'm taking the camera, so maybe I will be able to post a new entry either tonight or tomorrow. Please pray for my daughter & I, as we will be taking part in a 3 mile walk-a-thon tomorrow morning. It's to help raise money for our community food bank. Thanks, and have a great weekend friend!

Blessings,

I am not sure if you know, but my family is a baking family. I hate summer out of door weddings! We've had a few melted ones over the years. I don't think brides are thinking very clearly when they order an out door reception in August in Indiana! Thanks for posting your wedding memories!
