"Don't worry about anything; on the contrary, make your requests known to God by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving. Then God's shalom, passing all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with the Messiah Yeshua." Philippians 4:6-7 (CJB)

My friend SBadgley, awhile back had a post about hope chests. I posted the links she provided below. When I was a young girl, I can remember thinking of how romantic this idea was, but never really persuade it. I did start collecting some nice dishes here and there for a house one day, but not very much at all. I do wish I have had done more, just because of the fact of how expensive it is to start a home. We did receive nice wedding gifts, but there was so much we still needed it.
DD, has said she would like a hope chest, but wants to make sure her daddy makes hers. I am afraid, she will get married before he makes hers just kidding honey!!!!! I have been telling DD she can have all of my nice things one day when I die. So, the other day we were organizing winter/summer stuff, and all of the linen closet with it.... she had so much fun going through some of my linens. She is always asking "Can I have this when I get married? I don't want to wait until you die" She says with a smile. "How precious! I cherish these moments with her"
About hope chest, I know of several homeschooling families who are getting into this wonderful legacy with their DDs. I am thinking that maybe we will start with some basic things.... One thing I am thinking about giving DD soon, will be a nice sewing basket with good quality sewing things.
Did any of you have a hope chest? Are you making one for your DD? Any thoughts? Any suggestions on this?
I have been preparing my children's chests for many years. We have things like fine china (family heirlooms), table linens that I have crocheted or cross-stitched, and bath linens also. There are more of the regular types of items, like silverware, basic baking pans and utensils. But we have also included bibles, with family information in them. I have been preparing recipe collections as well. Those include things that they have loved and generational recipes. And each will get a copy of our family "SOP" (Standard Operating Procedure) which is a how-to book for all things from cleaning to cooking to home schooling. Best of luck in preparing yours.
My step mother actually made mine up for me. I lived with her and my father from 16 years old, till I married. It is a cedar chest which was her fathers. She filled it with linens, dishes that were my great aunts, and I added to it things I would pick up here and there when Bill & I were engaged. I will have to check out these sites you have listed here, so that I can pass this onto Ashley. Thanks for sharing.
I really wanted a hope chest, but was convinced that I would never get married, really. I was 26 when I met Jeff. That doesn't seem old now, but at the time ancient! I didn't even date in high school, which I now see as a blessing and protection! I would like to have a hope chest for Grace. I have a chest from my Grandmother I am keeping for her. It has some quilts my great grandmother made. I'll give Grace my china too. It's a start!
I wanted a hope chest, but never had one. Mom did keep a few linens & such in her ceder chest for me, but then never gave them to me once I was married. Instead she recently gave some of it to my daughters, without checking with me. lol I didn't marry until I was 34, so I had bought a lot of stuff before that and my dh had a lot too, so between that and those wonderful Target gift registery gifts for our wedding, we were pretty well set.
I did inherit my aunt's ceder chest that I am keeping for my oldest dd, and plan on giving our second dd my Mom's cedar chest when she passes on. For right now, they are just an extremely heavy piece of furniture that gets in the way. lol I store our photo albums and a few linens in it now.
As I'm getting older, I often consider what to buy, what to keep, and what to get rid of in light of whether my daughter might want it in the future. Hope chests are nice, or just storing some stuff away in boxes. Maybe even putting a little money aside for her to buy some stuff when she does marry. I like the SOP book idea. We have also started recipe cards and I plan on getting each of the girls a Longerberger Basket recipe card file in the future.
This Blog is about my life and the different adventures that I experience being a wife, homeschooling mother, homemaker, friend, and daughter of the king of the Universe. I am a follower of Yeshua (Jesus' name in Hebrew) He was born a Jew and lived as a Jew on this earth. It's because of him, and his incredible love towards me, that my ashes were turned into beauty.
I'm a native of Brazil. I have been married to my DH, for 22 years. We met while he was there on a Mission's trip. We have one wonderful 13 years DD.
