Aug. 3, 2007 - Show and Tell Friday
As some of you know I had company all week. It was nice to have DH's Dad here with us this week. I'm sorry I couldn't visit anyone's blog; I will try to catch up soon with everyone.
For Show and Tell this week, I chose to show this small old fashioned prairie farm lamp.
This lamp came from my maternal grandparent's farm house. The last time I went to Brazil, was the last time I saw my grandmother. It was so precious to visit with her and ask her lots of questions about my family' history. I asked her if I could have something from her house that would remind me of her and her life. I knew the China was out of the question for grandma had 6 girls. When I asked her for one of the farm's lamp she was chocked; she looked at me and said: "This old thing? Who would want this old, ugly thing in America? Wouldn't you like a new one from the market, I was thinking all along you wanted something big, like my China or Jewelry." The family around me, all looked chocked as well. I am sure they thought I was nuts????
My grandparents never had electricity. Candles were too expensive. She did have one beautiful, glass oil lamp, but kept that on her formal dinning room. I can remember as the sun was going down, the little lamps being lit for the evening. Their house is enormous and very dark at night, I was very glad to have one of these. I can still remember the smell of Kerosene all over the house.
This little lamp (lamparina) is made out of tin, and requires a very thick wick.
To me this is a very special memory, I could have bought a new one, but I wanted hers; I wanted the sweet memory that a newer one would not have had.

What an absolutely beautiful story behind that lamp. And the lamp is beautiful too. I can see why you wanted, besides the history behind it. I think it's very sweet. :)

That is neat looking, I have the old oil lamps. One thing I treasure the most is my Grandma's plates. I'll take pic's over the weekend to share this coming up Friday.

What a neat little treasure! That's what I tell my grandma, it's not the expensive stuff I want its the stuff with the most memories. I also tell her that if she wants me to have something I'd rather her give it to me now, not because of greed but because I'm not arguing with anyone over anything when the time comes.
Blessings!

| I am like you. I like the unusual, older things that have special meaning rather than the jewelry and dishes and things. That lamp is very cool. Do you speak Portugese? I was wondering because of the Brazil connection. |

Oh how neat. I love hierlooms, don't you. The treasure of the memories that they hold are priceless!
My step mother thought I was strange when all I wanted of my grandmothers was her coffee mug.
Blessings,
