Climbing the Mountains

It's official I am an overachiever!  My MRI proves it.  My knee is total.  One jump and I can take out all ligaments. I am getting better with Physical Therapy but in a few weeks I will be having surgery to rebuild my ACL, both lateral ligaments as well as the right and left meniscus.  Apparently this will require harvesting of hamstring muscle to fix so I will again be on crutches for 3 more weeks.  God has been amazing and has provided a wonderful surgeon, physical therapist and a homeschool girl to be a mother's helper for four hours a day so hubby can work and I can rest.  God has also provided a visit by my mil to help get the house back in order as well as an affordable maid service to come clean during my recovery.

We will climb this mountain of life and survive because He alone gives us the strength.

We had our last visit today with our pediatrician of seven years.  She has decided to retire and focus on her children and family.  We will miss her greatly and have loved her care of our four babies these many years.  It is with joy that we accept and trust her in her choice of a new doctor for our children.  We had been patiently waiting until time to select a male doctor for our three sons and it seems that God provided that to us by having our retiring pediatrician hire a male doctor to take over her practice.  It was with sadness that we said our good-byes to each other, yet both of us knowing that she is fulfilling the purpose intended for her life.  Please join me in praying for her salvation as we have been doing for these many years.  She is a wonderful doctor but lost.  We unfortunately will be losing our opportunity to witness to her through our relationship and our children, but I have faith that God will place someone in Dr. S's life to show her to Him.

Rest

I guess it was time for me to rest my  body more and appreciate all that I do get done in a normal day.  Recently I have felt that we weren't accomplishing enough in housework, schoolwork, church, Bible Study, etc.  I guess that God decided I could use some rest......so on Saturday I injured my knee while jumping on the trampoline with two of my kiddos.  Fortunately daddy was back from a business trip (only by 12 hours) to drive me to the urgent care.  My knee is not broken but I have a brace and am on crutches.  Quite a feat when I have a 6mo, 21mo, 3yo, and 6yo.  I never realized how much work I am able to accomplish until I sit and see all that is undone.  I am not very patient as I am very very tempted to get up and take care of it all.  Then I remember when I tried to walk on Saturday and immediately fell.  As it was I had to crawl on my bottom to get into the house and hubby used the kids scooter to get me to the car.  I am sure we provided much entertainment for our neighbors who already think we are crazy b/c we homeschool, have more than two kids, etc.  Fortunately hubby works from home when not traveling but he is having a hard time doing his work and my "work" as well.  About all I can do with my leg elevated and crutches is talk, feed the baby, and do some school with my oldest sitting next to me.   Of course, this would happen when my dd is potty-training and still sometimes has accidents.  Daddy has a new appreciation for the life of a hs mom and I feel so bad that he is having to carry so much responsibility.

My first try as a blogger.

I have been hearing and reading all the rage of blogs and decided to take the plunge.  I am ready to begin this adventure so that I can share our homeschool life with our many friends and family members.  I guess there really isn't much to the blog but I have been so hesitant......perhaps worried about the time it would take when I already have a cup overflowing.

Watch for regular updates on our school days and family fun.

I guess I will start by describing our homeschool.  We are a classical homeschool family using Tapestry of Grace.  This year we have been studying The Ancient World.  We are running pretty far behind and are still in our study of Greece.  Hopefully we will get Rome finished before it is time to start another year.  Normally we would be finished by now, but when you have a new baby in the NICU, then Christmas, then a surgery for the baby well it all adds up to time slowing down.

We have had a very great week in our study of Canaan.  We did a cookie map for the topography of the promised land today.  It was great and the kids actually learned where the places were.  Our 6yo ds enjoyed putting on chocolate jimmies to show Jericho's walls that had fallen down.  We have also had a busy week trying to figure out how to win at the game of knucklebones?  I guess that will keep us all busy for awhile yet.  We learned about constellations and mosiacs as well.  We are moving onto I Samuel in our Bible study and looking forward to studying David.  The kids are learning wonderfully and enjoying the process.

Our 6yo ds who usually fights me about math, phonics, language arts came downstairs last night and logged into his school work on his own.  The little guy finished all of his first grade math in one night and then did his assignments for today.  I can see he is developing more and more character each day.  I tend to fail in noticing his daily improvements until they are super drastic.  I guess I need to wake up and pay more attention or else some day I will look and he will be grown.  The other three just require so much more care with potty training, diapers, nursing, etc that the oldest gets less time except at night when the littles go to bed.

Our 3yo is fully potty trained!  Yeah!!!  Now only two in diapers.  That is nicer on the pocketbook.  She just decided this last week that she really wanted to be a big girl.  Once she made the choice the battle was over.  The only bad thing is she is trying to force/encourage her baby brother (20 mos) that he needs to be a big boy too!  I wouldn't mind if he really understood, but all he wants is not to wear a diaper or anything.  I can't count the number of times she has taken him in the bathroom and removed his diaper and put him on the potty.  She keeps telling him he can have potty candy if he will go and wear underpants too!  She is such a little mommy.

Our usual array of spring packages are beginning to arrive (much to the disappointment of the mail-lady who carries so many books in the boxes) and it is such fun to explore all we will be learning next year.  My 3yo's K4 book arrived and I showed it to her.  Her immediate response "mommy, get me a pencil".  We are casual with school for this age but she is all about having work to do.  She always begs to do her "handwriting" and her school on the computer like her brother.  I looked at her computer profile yesterday and was amazed at all the phonics and math lesson activities he had done on the computer-- and she did pretty well for being 3 as well.  This year our mail-lady finally asked when we got three large packages in one day.  I told her to prepare for more as I typically order from about 7-10 places.

Well that was the first run of my blog!  Hope you enjoy our daily saga.
