Jul. 16, 2008 - Teen Suicide

Breaking the Silence of Suicide

Did you know that most (bout 80%) potential suicide victims communicate their intentions before attempting suicide? Knowing what to look for -- the usual symptoms -- and what to do, can better prepare us to take action. As Elizabeth, 15 and her friend, Shelby, walked home from their student ministry meeting, Elizabeth said she was going to clean her room and then kill herself. Shelby thought Elizabeth was joking, dismissed the comment, and went to her own home. That evening, Elizabeth found her parent's gun. Before her parents returned from church, Elizabeth cleaned her room, turned photos of herself face down, laid out clothes for her burial, wrote a note: "I love you all, and I'm sorry. Elizabeth". Then she shot herself. That night, her parents found her lifeless body. "It is apparent to us now that Elizabeth had planned her death for some time, "Carolyn, Elizabeth's mother, said. "She made elaborate preparations in her room that Wednesday night to kill herself." Elizabeth's friends at church told her family that Elizabeth often made jokes about taking her own life. As early as six years before, she had told a friend about finding the hidden gun.

Suicide is increasing among teenaged girls

About 29,000 people kill themselves every year in the United States. More than half a million people attempt suicide, but fail to complete it. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds. For unknown reasons, suicide rates among teens-- especially girls -- are rising. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that suicides increased between 2003-2004: In girls 10-14 from 56 deaths to 94 up 75.9%. In young women 15-19 from 256 to 355 up 32.5%. In males 15-19 from 1,222 to 1,345 up 9%.

Know what can trigger suicidal thoughts:

Sometimes just knowing what situations can bring thoughts of suicide can help identify those at risk. If you notice a friend feeling intensely lonely, depressed, or unusually frustrated, or if she talks about feeling worthless or like a failure, she may be struggling unsuccessfully to cope. If she pulls away from friends and isolates herself, starts to use drugs or alcohol, expresses fear of failure and other problems that seem inescapable, she needs help. Triggers include the divorce of parents, unstable homelife, or a lack of attention/love from their family members. A relative or close friend's suicide may also prompt "copycat" suicidal thoughts in others.

Be alert to the symptoms of possible suicide:

Elizabeth talked to her friends about committing suicide, but other warning signs include: irregular eating and sleeping patterns, mood swings and erratic behavior, withdrawla from family, friends, and social activities, a preoccupation with death and dying, an increase in alcohol and or drug use, decreased interest in personal appearance, lack of interest in hobbies, work, school, or other usual activities, and giving away prized possessions.

What to do when you suspect a loved on is at risk for suicide:

When you see even one warning sign, or when a friend mentions wanting to die or hurt herself, tell a trusted adult immediately. Go to your parents, a teacher, or school counselor, and advise him of the situation, and you will have done your part to help your friend. Ask your pastor or school counselor to invite suicide prevention agencies and counselors to your church or school to talk with parents and teens about the problem of increasing teens suicide. Most pastors keep a current referral list of Christian counselors in their church or community who will help them respond to suicidal threats and crises.

How to respond when suicide happens:

Despite our best efforts to prevent it, teenagers suicide can happen. When it does, communities must be prepared in advance to handle the situation. Teen suicide can devastate a family, church, school, or entire community. I leaves scores of hurting people in shock and disbelief. When word about Elizabeth's suicide spread through the church and community, Carolyn's pastor responded, compassionately and wisely addressing the hurt and concerns of those who knew and loved her.

A teen's suicide not only brings grief to friends and family, but social stigma, as well. Survivors tend to blame themselves for letting it happen. They often experience guilt, anger, betrayal, and embarrassment. Bringing Elizabeth's death out in the open removed much of the social stigma. Friends, family, and church members were encouraged to talk about the problems of suicide, and learned how to help each other. The church and community began to work together to prevent future suicides.

This was wrote by Denise George -- I wanted to share this with everyone -- It has opened my eyes alot -- I have an 18 year old sister that use to say those things -- I had a grandpa that attemped suicide -- I had a classmate that commited suicide. Both of my sisters have lost friends to suicide, and just this year my sisters boyfriend lost his brother to suicide. It's hard to deal with like the article says you want to know Why! How could it come to this! God Bless and keep all these kids in your prayers. The names in this story have been changed for privacy.

I got the first cake iced and was sitting there trying to figure out how to put the top cake on -- I've done this before on even cakes this was different layers, so I had my husband come and help me flip it and get it straight. Well to make a long story short the cake is finished everyone is still alive, all the cake mix form little one is cleaned up -- Got all the cake mix off of him. Finally finished about 5:00 -- Now I'm just praying that the baby does not fall off the cake on the way there tomorrow.

Jul. 5, 2008 - Do Not Judge

"Do not judge so that you will not be judged." This command was given by Jesus Christ as He was preaching to the crowds on the Mount of Olives. This and similar verses are often cited as proof that Christians should not go around condemning others about their behavior. To begin the discussion, it would be good to know what the word "judgmental" really means. judg·men·tal (jŭj-mìn'tl) adjective

Of, relating to, or dependent on judgment

Inclined to make judgments, especially moral or personal ones

So, the word "judgmental" refers to making a judgment, especially about somebody's moral or personal behavior. People tend to get upset about others who impugn their own personal behavior.

In the Sermon on the Mount of Olives, Jesus preached that people should not judge others. In addition, in His handling of the woman caught in adultery, He said, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."

I always tell my kids if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it. I take being judge to heart, we left a church because fellow Christian were judgmental -- I don't think this is the way God wants us to act -- This is a homeschool blogger site we are suppose to be here for one another, giving each other wisdom, and courage. We are suppose to stand together as a homeschool family but, instead we judge each other. This my friends needs to change because one day you will be judged, lets see how you like it.

Jul. 5, 2008 - What Does It Mean To Homeschool

Seen this on the internet and would like to share it with you!

Homeschooling is, in the most simplest of terms, having school at home.     Homeschooling is when a child or children from a family receive their educational instruction from someone in the household, usually a parent or a guardian. There are a variety of legal definitions of what it means to homeschool that can vary from one state to another.

When you homeschool, it means that you are in charge of your child’s learning and education. It is up to you to choose the direction of your child’s education, and to provide educational instruction and other educational opportunities that may help your child to learn.

This raises an interesting point: to homeschool does not mean to sit at the kitchen table all day every day teaching things to children. Rather, it means to use a variety of educational tools, such as the parent’s own instructional ability, community resources, and homeschool materials that are available for purchase, to provide the child with a quality education. In this regard, it may be comforting to a parent who is considering the possibility of homeschooling to understand that they don’t themselves have to be an expert in every content area. For example, a parent doesn’t have to know how to play the tuba for the child to learn to play the tuba. The child can receive this instruction from someone else. Likewise, a parent doesn’t have to be an expert in Science for their child to be educated in science. A visit to a planetarium, for example, can be as educational or even more educational than a school lecture in astronomy.

Making the decision to homeschool can bring several advantages, both for children and parents. Parents who homeschool, for example, are able to spend all day with their child or children. Because of this, parents of who homeschool often have a better understanding of their children, even into and beyond their teenage years. Likewise, the homeschooled tends to develop good communication skills with parents. In addition, parents are able to make their own family values central to their childrens’ education. They can contribute positively to their childrens’ academic, social, and emotional development, as well. When a child is homeschooled, they don’t have to worry about being paced with other children; they can work ahead or behind if they need to. Another pro is that homeschooled children can be encouraged to explore areas of academic interest, in addition to the basic fundamental educational needs.

Real homeschooling means being broadminded enough to know that all knowledge does not come from books. Taking your children's interests and aptitudes into consideration and allowing them to be creative, express their ideas, solve problems, explore and discover many things for themselves will bring a wealth of learning to them which most of us formally-educated adults never had. You as the teacher-manager simply need to monitor and guide to keep things under control and in balance.

Real homeschooling means having a strong enough philosophy (reasons for homeschooling) that you are not swayed nor dismayed by the disapproval of relatives and friends. Social pressure is hard to handle unless you have settled it in your mind that you are doing the best for your children and their good is the most important consideration for you.

Real homeschooling means understanding how children learn and being patient enough to allow them to mature naturally and not put presence on to keep up with a certain grade level or other children.

Real homeschooling means knowing that children learn best when they are free from pressure.

Real homeschooling means awareness that the active agent in learning is the child, not the teacher.

Jul. 4, 2008 - Happy Fourth of July

Don't forget the true Meaning of the Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is a great time of year. There are fireworks that light up the night sky, barbeques with tasty food, and most importantly it’s the celebration of our nation’s independence.

I do not doubt the fact that we as Americans value freedom. With the recent Memorial Day celebrations that remembered war heroes of the past and present I know we appreciate what those brave men and women did or are doing for us. I know I do. I just wonder how many people truly appreciate the Fourth of July for what it truly means.

America has grown into the most powerful country in the world and the best country in the world. I think most of us forget about the beginnings though.

Before we were a free country, we were part of the British Empire, occupied by British troops in their bright red. The American colonies were really only good to the British Empire for the tax money they generated. That is until the colonists got tired of paying too much in taxes and decided to do something about it.

This idea to revolt against the Brits and start a war for independence was David versus Goliath. On one side there is a well trained and supplied army, on the other there was hunters, farmers and city folk. Anyone who had a gun basically.

If the Vegas odds makers were around back then they most likely wouldn’t have given us Americans much of a chance, but we had something more than military might on our side. We had heart.

The American Colonies knew what they wanted and they weren’t about to stop short of achieving their goal of freedom. The colonists were so determined they even got the French to fire a gun and help us defeat the British.

As more than 200 years have passed I think Americans have forgotten what the true meaning of the Fourth of July really is. I know for a fact that many Brits forgotten or chose to forget the Revolutionary War.

I have noticed the Fourth of July seems to have turned into a time to play with explosives, walk down the middle of the street while waving to our friends and eat funnel cake.

The intentions are good, but I think we’ve strayed from the true meaning of the Fourth of July celebration. With family members, neighbors and friends off fighting for freedom, I am sure this year’s Fourth of July we all thought about our troops, but how many thought about our founding fathers?

I found this on the internet and it is oh so true -- This happens to be what we named our school after!!!! In those times when you feel like you are going crazy and can't seem to get you head on straight read the Serenity Prayer it will make you feel better. I have it posted in our classroom.

There are those days and times however, that serenity, courage and wisdom are all tested and in question.

Grant Me The Serenity To Accept
Things I Cannot Change. The Courage
To Change The Things I Cannot Accept
And The Wisdom To Hide The Bodies Of
Those I Had To Kill Today Because They
Got On My Nerves, And Also Help Me To
Be Careful Of The Toes I Step On Today
As They May Be Connected To The Feet
I May Have To Kiss Tomorrow.
Help Me Always To Give 100% At Work.

12% On Monday

23% On Tuesday

40% On Wednesday

20% On Thursday

5% On Friday

And Help Me To Remember When I’m
Having A Bad Day And It Seems That
People Are Trying To Wind Me Up,
It Takes 42 Muscles To Frown,

And Only Four To Extend My Arm
And Smack Someone In The Mouth!!!

There now dont you feel better... I do. Now go take on the day!

Jul. 2, 2008 - Crazy Summer

Well ladies I'm back on the blogging train again. This summer has been so crazy, I'm trying to get everything ready for our new school year starting Aug. 4 and I'm so excited I have a classroom this year -- So when we're not doing school we can just shut the door, this is also a good way to keep the 2 year old out of all the school books.

I'm finally starting to feel better I had surgery April 3o, had my uterus removed and bladder reconstruction, let me tell you this is no piece of cake but I found a wonderful support group (it's in my links) and the ladies on there made me feel better about alot of thing. It was funny -- everyone I talked to before my surgery said oh your going to feel like a new person blah blah blah -- I don't feel like a new person yet and found out it's like a three month recovery -- I still hurt when I do to much and my bladder still bothers me but, hopefully in time it will all go away and I will feel normal again. I prayed about this surgery not sure if I should do it -- but I feel God led me to it -- After my surgery we found out my uterus was pre-cancerous so now I don't regret having it done. I will post pictures later -- I'm redoing my blog again for the third time. God Bless
