Crossway Book Review Program: Hymns for a Kid's Heart

Posted by Beth at 11:55 AM, Oct. 30, 2008 in Crossway Book Reviews

I was thrilled to receive my first reveiw copy of a book from Crossway several weeks ago--Hymns for a Kid's Heart, written by Bobbie Wolgemuth and Joni Eareckson Tada.  This is a beautiful little book with gorgeous illustrations and simple stories aimed for young children, yet a fun and easy read for us "big kids," too!

The Song Writers

The book contains thirteen brief biographies of the writers of many well-known hymns still sung in churches today--people like Martin Luther, John Newton, and Isaac Watts.  Mrs. Wolgemuth gives a retelling of their lives in short, easy-to-understand sentences that even an early reader will be able to spell out.

The Devotional

Immediately after the bio is Joni Eareckson Tada's devotional, drawing on lessons gleaned from the song writer's life and applying those lessons to the reader.  With stories from her own life experience, she creates a very personal study for each biography.

The Song

Music-lovers like me will be thrilled to find a piano arrangement of each of the thirteen hymns, complete with guitar tabs and the lyrics to several verses.  What more could I ask?

All in all, this is a short and sweet guide to the hymns we all know, explained and expounded on for young children.  Bravo to Bobbie Wolgemuth and Joni Eareckson Tada, who brought it all together quite beautifully!

Haha, well I guess that wasn't nice.

Anyway, my writing is going fine. *sigh* I've started over. I kept the prologue and the start of the first chapter, but everything else has to be written over. I decided that it was much too hard to write an interesting story from that character's perspective (especially in first person), so I'm switching it to another character. It's almost kind of sad, since I was up to 30 pages, but it has to be done.

As for NaNo, not this year (besides, that would mean I would have to start tomorrow, what are you thinking?). I am not ready to write nearly 2000 words per day for all of November. And I don't know what the story would be about. It can't be something you've already started, can it? So keep working on me. Maybe next year... or the year after that. Or maybe after school's out of the way. :o)

Is TBU what you wrote for NaNo last year? How are you going to manage writing that and WTWWY at the same time? That should be fun. LOL!

Thanks for your comment.
Alison

With names like "Bobbie Wolgemuth" and "Joni Eareckson Tada", how could it possibly be complicated?

As a reviewer, does Crossway let you keep the book, or do you have to return it (unless you pay)?

Aww, I like that last picture of you...it's very pretty and the coloring is cool. Hope NaNoWriMo starts off well for you and you feel better soon. I think I might be getting sick with whatever you have :-(. Hopefully not. Adios from New Mexico.
