"By The Golden Sea": Chapter One- Part Two

Posted in Posted by Martha Finley

The streets had emptied out now. The only sounds were of the ocean and of the wind. A chill began to surround her, so she walked faster. The birds were no longer in the sky, and darkness was settling in the street. Fear over took her, and she ran.

While she was running, she began to hear footsteps behind her. Trying her best to remain calm, she looked behind her, and she realized that she was being followed. Not knowing what to do, she ran faster and faster, but every time she glanced back beind her, she was still being followed.

She finally made it to the town gate. She took care not to make it seem that she knew she was being followed, and she slowed down. Then, when she got to the other side of the gate, she bolted straight towards home. The footsteps seemed to silence , so when she could run no longer, she looked back once more only to find she was alone.

She remained alert, and continued home. The trip home was always a lonely one, and in the dark she felt as if she were the only one alive. Praying to God always made her feel better, and so did looking out at the golden waters of the sea. The sea was just as lively as the village, and thinking of the ones who lived in it-

"Do not take another step, or you shall never take one again." The voice that spoke was rough, and it sounded as if someone were trying to cover up their real voice. Remaining in a standing position she answered,

" W-Wh-What do you want?"she questioned". I have no money on me, and the little bag I have is full of nothing but my drawing supplies."

"I do not want money or your drawings."He laughed." I want only to know why a young girl would be traveling on such a lonely road this late in the evening, when the only light there is comes from the moon, which is not very much light if you ask me.

"Well, I did not ask you, sir. So I advise you to leave me be, or I shall scream so loud that the Prince of the ocean will send a wave that will knock you off your feet." She turned to look at him, but she could not see him.

" I am not one to hide behind, but beside". She turned to look,  and she realized he stood beside her.

A dark cape covered his face, and the height of him had to be at least 6 feet. Harmony's fear came over her again as she look up at him. She took a few steps back, and was prepared to run, when he caught her by the hands, and pulled her to him.

" Do  not fear, I only just want to know something from you." He held onto her tight as she struggled to  get free.

" Please, let me go" she pleaded." Let me go or I will call the Prince of the sea."

"Ah, so you are a friend of the Ocelians , the people of the water. I have heard that not many people above the water want anything to do with the prince, the king, and their people."

"Well, perhaps you have heard wrong." she struggled from his tight grasp on her hands, but was unable to free herself. Breathlessly she said. "I am a friend of the Prince's.

"A friend of the prince's, eh?" He leaned toward her ear and whispered" Do you think of him as only a friend?"

Then she knew, and her face brightened. She looked at him and said,

"Yes, only a friend." She found the strength she needed, she got out of his grasp. Then she uncovered his face. She laughed as she realized who her captor was.

" Windlon, how could you scare me like that?" She hugged him the way a friend hugs another friend." I almost fainted in fright."

" My  dear, I mean't no harm. I only wished to know how you did, that is, how you did with your preformance infront a certain important lady?" His eyes were looking into ger own, and the stars over head reflected in them.

Harmony's answer was made known to him by the look of disappointment on her face. Sitting on a boulder that laid by the road, she looked down at her feet. Windlon went to where she sat, and placed his arm around her shoulders.

" The look on your face shows me the answer." He let go, and sat down beside her." You are perfect for being a messenger between here and the Stone Castle. Why would she not accept you?

"I may be perfect for the job." She looked straight into his questioning eyes. " I was just....just...."

" You were just what?" He seemed as if he were trying to read her heart. She sighed, and answered with three simple words.

  "I was late."

"You late?!"Come now, Harmony, do not tell me you were day dreaming once again."

"Then I will not tell you I was day dreaming" she sadly replied."I will tell you that I was drawing pictures of scenes of the sea. Birds flying home to their babies, fish coming up to have a look at our world, boats lazily sailing by as the sun glowed brightly behind them....I completley forgot the time."

A moment of understanding passed between them. As they sat there, they both became lost in thought. Both were dreamers, and dreamers can relate to other dreamers, for dreams are thoughts that can only be shared wth another who has dreams of their own. Sitting side by side, they thought of the future, or should I write dreamed of the future. Yes, they dreamed.

GOD bless,

Martha Finley
