An old face was what she expected to see, but no, the face was young. The king was no older then she. His face was kind, and he looked down at her with eyes of laughter. She could not help but to smile, and he smiled back. "Welcome Penny." greeted the king." Has it been only a few hours since last we met?" He laughed.Penny looked at him, and then her face turned red. The boy she had met earlier was the king! Never had she been more embarassed in her life, nor had she felt such humility. She bowed her head.
"Your Majesty, I-"her voice cracked, and she broke into tears. The king saw her distress and ordered everyone in the room, except for the old queen, and Penny, to leave immediately. Murmuring voices followed , but all obeyed until the last person walked out, shutting the white doors. The king led Penny to the throne and set her in it.
"Penny, it is alright." he said." I should have not laughed at you." He smiled as he looked into her eyes." You looked so funny in those boys clothes, that I could not control myself."
Penny looked up, and the tears stopped. A quiet moment passed by, and then laughter came from her lips. The mood became more cheerful between them, and after asking for forgivenss, the king agreed.
They talked for a long time. Penny had not been called princess since she had entered, and so she completely forgot about asking why she was called princess. The room once again filled with people, and the King, the queen, and Penny stood before them.
"My people, today we have met our visitor. She has everything a girl needs, now that she is with us." He looked at Penny, and then back to the listeners." We have shown her the good of where we live, but she must know that this is not what life is always here."
The king walked over to a window, and opened it. Penny watched as he put his hand out the window. It turned black, and wrinkled. The life in it drained slowly away. She walked over to him.
"What is this? What is wrong with your hand?" Taking his hand from the window, he answered.
" I am positive that you have heard the tales of the people who lived in the Dark Forest, of the witch, and of our being turned into creatures?" Penny nodded her head yes, but questions still filled her eyes.
"Penny, the city covers what we really look like. The light, it makes one more beautiful then they truly are." He put his hand on her shoulder."At night, when the light goes away, this world will become nothing but a terror for you."
"But-"
"A terror."
GOD bless you all,
